This article seems a little out of context maybe... the question was asked differently as I recall?
    Anyway, no issue.

One of the things that stands out to me was the line about him not even being allowed to dress last season.
3rd QB's are allowed to dress as of 2023.
So that sort of hurts the credibility of this article. It wasn't like Mike said "You can't dress for the game." The NFL said it.

I would speculate on my own, Mason did tick off somebody in this organization.
They should have realized early on that Mitch is not a good option.

Very early on actually...... Mitch stunk it up so badly that the Kenny Pickett Era started earlier than expected..... then they doubled down and kept the status quo

To be fair, if he’s really this good then the whole league mis-evaluated him. He was available to every single team out there for absolutely nothing. The Jets in particular should be kicking themselves.

NFL teams have a lousy history of evaluating QBs. I’m sure there are plenty who have slid through the cracks. Even Brady nearly did.

Could have been even earlier if they just reached out to S.T.D.

He seemed to be better once they moved him into the backup role. He played extremely well to rally them past the Bucs and did a solid job filling in as a starter to beat the Panthers. He got stuck trying to carry the offense when they couldn't run the ball against the Ravens, which led to the predictable mix of some good throws and some horrid interceptions.

That said, I wrote on this site that they should replace Trubisky as the back up. I wanted someone like Minshew, Brissett, or Taylor. When it became clear that they were sticking with Trubisky, I didn't see any reason to put much faith in Rudolph. The Steelers and the rest of the league seemed to be in agreement on that. Oops.

Why do you think Mason ticked off someone? What did I miss.

    Man, they buried him.
They didn't even flinch when Mitch was stinking up the joint.

Well first off Mason Rudolph is operating on a small sample size. So crowning him or acting like everyone missed some amazing player is foolish and premature. There have been plenty of examples of QBs who show well in a limited window and get everyone excited, but over time this league will get down to brass tacks on what they do well and not so well and take away the good things. So the successful QBs are the ones who can continuously work through those things. There are the rare guys who are so correctly wired that they can stay ahead of that stuff and beat defenses when they take away their run game plus their top target and maybe even their second target but those are what we call the greats.

There's plenty of reason to be looking forward to seeing more of Rudolph and his emergence is great for this team. Because whether he succeeds long term in the role or not he will at least push Pickett, who is an investment the team will be trying to get their return from. If Rudolph is good enough to own that job like one of the greats, like for example let's say the way Warner did when he came out of obscurity to get a gig, then that will take care of itself.

But I think the media as per usual are getting way ahead of themselves.

The news of Mike Tomlins contract renewal is quite alarming ! His coaching record the last few years is mediocre at best ! He has never gone more than the first round in the playoffs the last several years , and he has never won a championship with his own drafted players ! And if the Steelers miss the playoffs this year it will be entirely on him ! After refusing to play Rudolph while the season slipped away despite the urging of many in the media and fan base his ego could not allow common sense to prevail !

Don't forget: Tomlin's released depth chart for week 1 had Mason as the #2 QB, and Kenny Pickett as your inactive #3 QB to start the season.

A couple of days later after talking with Rooney, Tomlin had to release another Week 1 depth chart with Kenny as the backup QB!

It would have been Mason coming off the bench to replace Mitch in 2022 if Tomlin had been able to stick with his original depth chart to begin the season.

Some good throws behind a superb running game for 2 games. Let's not get carried away. QBs get all the glory and much of the blame, but it is a team game. A couple of spectacular grabs by Pickens and Johnson made Rudolf look great. They drop or miss those, and he looks average. Give credit to his supporting cast.

That line of reasoning is bogus. Every team in the league passed, repeatedly on Purdy to the point of picking him last. Now, how did that work out?

The NFL is a copycat league and if the Steelers were not resigning him, them the other teams probably felt he was not worth signing. Then again, why did it take so long for Flacco to get signed by someone this year with all the hurt QB's.

In my opinion it comes back to the league sucking at evaluating QBs. They all look for the same sorts of guys - big arm, athletic, measurable stats. There are guys that stand out from the pack that way and succeed. And then there are the Trubiskys of football - guys with all the physical traits, but none of the mental ones.

The issue with QBs is reading the field and pocket awareness are really just as important as the physical attributes. And those traits can change over time. And the difference between someone who’s good at those things and someone who’s less good is small, but shows up in real game situations. It might not show up in practice.

I’m still not convinced Rudolph is going to be the long-term starter. Cincy and Seattle have two of the worst Ds in the league (it’s no coincidence Pickett’s best game by far also came against Cincy). But I did think he was always good enough to be a competent backup.

You are assuming Mason will be here to push Kenny. He might be, but as a FA he can go with any offer that comes. It may be MR or his agent have dollar signs in their eyes, but realistically he should get a decent bump from the league minimum he is playing for.

IDK if he talked with Rooney about that or not, KP was a 1st round pick, he was going to get in sooner or later, Ben mentioned the 'business' of this in his podcast, and the reason (most likely) KP will still be number 1 after the season, unless they just feel they want to move on and admit the pick was trash. The one thing said was it being Colberts pick, there may be less politics involved, but that 1st round gets you time, unless you show up to camp at 400 pounds and collapse after a hundred yard sprint, lmao. Oh jamain less ice cream and more weight room could have saved your career.

It was not misevaluation. It was a bad business decision not give him his 2-3 year window. Everybody got it, Mitch got it in Chicago, Kenny got it here, in that draft Mayfield got it, Darnold, Rosen, Allen, Lamar Jackson, everybody. And we did not do it. It's bad.

"There is a thin line between a backup and a pro bowler." Somebody please explain this. That's like saying there is a thin line between Pouncey and Kendrick Green. You can see and tell the difference.

I think it's an evaluation problem on the staff. You might misevaluate players but that is a huge disparity between a backup and a pro bowler....

The problem is that three games isn't enough to make clear determination, but Rudolph is a free agent after the season. Even if they do want to keep him, there is no guarantee he is going to want to stay.

Rosen did not get a two-year window. The Cardinals gave up on him after one season, taking Kyler Murray with the first pick in the draft the following year.

Also, every single one of those guys you mentioned was a first-round draft pick. Rudolph was taken in the third round. Teams are going to be a hell of a lot more patient with a guy they took in the first.
