my thing is why have a qb like ben and then want to dink and dunk every series. ben can throw the ball. we don't however need him to be a loose cannon with it. to me the O went from one extreme to another. i'd like an in between type of guy. i was never sold on haley from the start. to many 3rd down conversions had to be made in his offense on every drive. it just didn't fit with the qb we have as a franchise guy.

Things were going very well the first nine weeks of the season. Ben was playing at an MVP level, getting rid of the ball quickly, hitting his checkdowns, not taking silly sacks AND the Steelers were 6-3. Ben gets injured and seemed to forget everything he had picked up the first nine games and reverted back to being Mr. Sandlot.

I think Todd Haley could be one of the best things that has happened to Ben's career but Ben may be too stubborn to realize it. The old Ben is gone. Gone are the days where he can single-handedly dominate a game physically. His escapability is not what it once was and I think we saw that at times this year. He'll still flash some of that but he is getting older and his body is taking a beating. He MUST learn to be a more cerebral quarterback in the second half of his career if he is to have the same kind of success he's had in the first half of his career. If he doesn't, he'll turn into a slow-footed, slow-minded, slow-reading QB that continues to hold the ball too long and doesn't have the ability to avoid pressure and prolong plays as he once did. He needs to prepare himself better in the film room to survive the second half of his career.

I was listening to Greg Schiano the coach of the TB Bucs this morning talking about preparing for Peyton Manning. He said that they thought they had some defensive schemes that would confuse Manning but everything they threw at him he was able to decode and defeat. THAT is the direction I'd like to see Ben go.

ben is not peyton in the read department. ben is what he is. give him time to stand there an extra 2 seconds and look before he has to do what he does best. we need to protect him with a better line first and foremost.

i just thought that whoever will be our oc is not very important , ben will run his personal offense ,so they can take who they want ..

btw i like Randy Fichtner too

If Haley ends up leaving, and Whisenhunt doesn't end up landing one of the other head coaching positions (I think he'll probably end up in Buffalo, IMO), then this becomes a no-brainer. Bring Whiz back to the Burgh ASAP! I don't care if he and Ben hate each other; he runs the style of offense that is a proven winner in this city. If #7 doesn't like it, he can take his ball and go home.

Sorry...I disagree. Ben won without Whiz and won slinging it. If you bring Whiz back you may as well keep Haley. (BTW-Whiz will NEVER come here when he probably feels he should have been the HC. You think he would work well with Tomlin?)

If we're going to start naming who we might like for a potentail new OC, how about Mark Helfrich from Oregon State? Everyone looks to Chip Kelly as the mastermind, but Helfrich I'm certain has a good deal of input in how the offense is run too. Ben seems to work quite well in the no huddle anyway, why not get someone who is comfortable calling a quick strike offense?

Im not so sure it matters who the OC is as long as Ben acts like an a$$hole. I think Ben will only be happy if the OC is BA again. He wants to do things his way. He needs to stop being pig headed.

He'll never be Peyton but he can be better. Ben is not dumb, he just needs to prepare better.

And the worst part is, I was just on Oregon's webpage too. I didn't realize they were two different schools. Shows you how much I pay attention to college ball ! :roflmao:

i totally agree with you. i want it where he's not thinking run because of backside pressure earlier then any other qb in the league. if he's got that extra second or two to stand in the pocket before he has to do his thing , we would see a much better qb.

that's the problem we should directly ask ben to hire who he wants since he is not going to change , at least he will shut up all the season

Yes, but you could say that about any other QB in the league, couldn't you?

HA! Probably... although I think the media was just trying to start something between Ben and Haley from day one...I think their relationship was better that what was portrayed.

Tomlin will make Kirby Wilson the OC most likely. I'm not crazy about it, but like others said: Ben is going to make this his offense. It doesn't really matter who they hire...

not if he has to move before anyone else in the league like i stated. he rarely gets the time others do in the pocket. thats why haley's dink and dunk helped him in the beginning. the ball comes out fast. thats why most thought the line looked better, not because they gave him more time.

if Kirby becomes the OC and our offense SUCKS what could we possibly say?

then when Wilson is gone do we scream towards him "I'M SORRY ,WILSON!!!"

I do know that the offense needs to score more points. their average was below par.

So what are you suggesting? That Ben was ignoring Haleys plays? That doesn't wash because I can guarantee if Ben was ignoring Haley, you would have seen several blow ups on the sidelines plus massive amounts of stories about how Ben isn't running Haleys plays. Everyone seems to forget or ignore that Ben suffered TWO big injuries at the same time, as far as Im concerned Ben was never right after that. To me is simple, if Haley and Ben are on the same page, then by all means, take another season to see if they can get this offense to perform at a high level but if they aren't, I think they are wasting time and hope Haley take off for Arizona. The whole forcing Ben to conform thing is counterproductive if he doesn't buy into it. I think Mac is right, we went from one extreme to another, there's no reason to be 100% dink and dunk, predicability is never a good thing, we were predictable under BA and we were predictable under TH, mix it up, keep the opposing DC guessing and don't make his job easier by telegraphing your plays.

nitrous, I will start by saying that I totally respect your point of view and facts expressed here. I realize that Gailey was a failure as a head coach in Buffalo and failed to properly use his offensive talents.

However... Chan Gailey was the Steelers offensive coordinator from 1994-1997. This was a period that the team won 4 straight AFC Central titles, went to three AFC title games, and won the AFC in 1995. This was also a period of some of the more exciting and dynamic Steelers offensive play that I've seen as a fan since the 1970's, and better than most of the teams since. Gailey won with 3 different Qb's, with 4 different feature RB's, and more different WR combos than I can remember (Ernie Mills, Charles Johnson, Andre Hastings, Yancy Thigpen among others, etc). Gailey was the guy who came up with the "slash" offense, and Kordell never really developed after he left. In fact, I attribute a lot of the team's struggles in the next several season to his departure and replacement. In further fact, I'll go on saying that in my 40 years watching the team, Gailey may have been my favorite OC.

I don't know if he is capable of being a good OC in the current NFL, but doggone it if he did not have a very favorable impact on the Steelers when he was here.

I'd not really been thinking about it that way, Jimmy - good call, though. Let's not forget that Lebeau wasn't a great Head Coach, either...

Seems we are a year late, some good choices out there, anyone of them could end back up as a HC though, I think Whiz definitely will. Gailey I see becoming an OC and Norv is a toss up, he's been a HC for so long now, not sure he'd even consider going back to being an OC.
