Among the comments section for a Steelers-related video, I saw more than a few commenters alluding to Mason Rudolph saving Christmas while conjuring up some lines from the classic Christmas song Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer, to which someone said somethin like, "I see Pittsburgh fans and comments like this, borrowing a line or two, but why don't any of you ever write the full song?"

Being a musician, I decided to read that as a sort of challenge of sorts, so that's what I set out to do. Granted, I'm fairly sure that fully written parody versions of the song centering on Mason Rudolph have already been writen long ago by someone, somewhere...but I haven't personally come across any, and thus, thought it would be fun (mood-boosting) challenge either way.

    The following is the result:

    Rudolph the 3rd Round Q.B.
Has the touch to make deep throws
Just ask the folks who saw it
His college fans would say they know

But all of the Pittsburgh Yinzers
Used to laugh and call him names
    They wouldn't let poor Rudolph
    Play in any Steelers games

    Then one foggy Christmas Eve
    Rooney came to say:
"Rudolph with your throws so nice
Won't you save my team tonight?"

Then all the Yinzers loved him
And they chugged IC with glee
    "Rudolph the Third Round Q.B.
    You'll go down in history!"
    __

Disclaimer: Given limited time and wanting to finish it before kick-off, this was the best I could do - it's hardly perfect, though. As such, I don't mind making edits to it if there are some good suggestions - however, please note that every word choice must strictly mirror the flow of stressed/unstressed syllables in the original song as closely as possible - not just to remain superficially faithful, but also so that it could be properly performed, if I would ever record it in-studio. I mean, I doubt I will, but... you also never know. Cheers!

Edit: Substituted Pabst with IC as suggested! (courtesy of Steel Machine)

Whoops. That title ended up being obnoxiously long and looking terribly formatted among the other posts as a result, which - aside from looking annoying - really triggers my OCD. :lolol:

I wish you could edit post titles, but that doesn't appear to be a thing...so I guess I'm just gonna have to live with it. Still, my bad.

This will also be my last self contained post about Mason Rudolph, unless he actually gets to play. I don't want people to think I'm a mega Mason fan - I just think he's a better QB2 than Mitch.

You can delete the post and start over. And being a musician I think you'd really enjoy a thread in the watercooler section.

I found it pretty cool but I'd have loved to see Iron City but it wouldn't have worked.

Nicely done. I actually thought the Pabst reference fit nicely. Been a good while since I have had a PBR.:drinks:

Here's a good beginning for you.

You know Bradshaw and Maddox and Tomzcak and Leftwich
Kordell, Scott Campbell, Trubisky, and Pickett
    But do you recall..........
The most mis-used QB of all

Nicely done haha I've got one that works well too :)

    Rudolph, the 3rd string QB
Can only really make deep throws
    Some people think he's decent,
But the truth is really that he blows

    Many drunken Yinzers
Used to laugh and call him names
Don't want to see poor Rudolph
    Play in any Steelers games

    Then one sad December night
    Tomlin came to say:
"Rudolph we are screwed so right,
its time to let you play tonight"

Then all the Yinzers cheered him
sent Mitch to the bench with glee
    Rudolph leads the offense
    Throws a hundred eighty-three

That's a far more cynical take, but super clever and funny - well done!

I think those going to the game should hand this out and do some caroling. We need a Christmas miracle!

    here is my attempt:

    Rudolph the 3rd string Quartreback
Finally gets a chance to play
    Tomlin has no other choices
Mason has to save the day

    All of the Pittsburgh diehards
They were loudly chanting his name
    Oh my gosh its Rudolph
Actually playing in a real football game

    Then one cold December night
    Tomlin came to say
Mason with your throws so tight
You really saved my ass tonight

Then all the fans they loved him
and they drank IC with glee
    Rudolph the 3rd string Quarterback
    You were actually on TV!!!

Congrats all, well played. FYI OP, you can edit the thread title using the "Thread Tools" link at the upper right corner of each page just below the current thread title that thread authors have at their disposal. I've used it numerous times.

Rudolph the 3rd string QB was told by the Steelers to hit the bricks

But none of the other 31 GM's wanted him, you could say they were all pricks

But all of the Steeler coaches laughed and called him names

They never let poor Rudolph play in any NFL games

Then one foggy Christmas eve Tomlin came to say

"Rudolph my .500 record is on the line, get out there and save my behind"

Then all of Cincinnati Bengals laughed and shouted with glee

"Rudolph the 3rd string quarterback, we just kicked your ass 45 to three!"

I can't believe Rudolph's actually starting this week. I kinda wrote my version of the song, basically on the 1% chance that it would actually be relevant. And now it looks like Rudolph is gonna get to lead the sleigh one last time.

By golly, it's a Christmas Miracle.

Have to tell you this little story. I have sisters into their 80's. They are Pittsburgh fans. I stole your song guy. They loved it!! I put in each of their Christmas cards. They said they never knew their brother was so witty with jingles. Still have not told them the truth that I stole it from you. Not sure I will, I'm enjoying their praise:)
