I prefer Ben Johnson right now,OC of the Detroit Lions. They need to stop living in the past (which has been a major problem for the Steelers for several years) and go with a true offensive guy

But does he bring the rest of the Doobie's with him as position coaches though? I don't think they have any FB experience.

Sean DeSai of the Eagles also fits the mold, and has Weidle connections. Another guy that fits the mold is Titans DC Shane Bowen. I prefer @Steelersfan43@Steelersfan43 idea of going after Ben Johnson, but cannot ignore the mold the Rooney's have looked for the past 50 years.

Please if they go with the DC of the eagles, who have an awful pass defense right now, I'm having a riot!

The game has changed. Defense can't be your focus anymore.

And the coaches that can't adapt to that new reality are struggling.

Get an offensive guy... if he knows how to build a high powered offense, even better. ;)

Defensive Head Coaches are outdated largely due to the rules changes to have more passing.

We need an innovative offensive head coach because any OC worth their salt will be snatched by another team for a head coach job. You can get another DC, but an offensive mind that can get an average QB to perform is worth far more.

You can get DC's to run the defense, but the Head Coach has to know offense, QB's, and schemes...the opposite of what we have now.

Ravens D is playing really well and you can see the improvement from last year. Id prefer an offensive minded HC personally but MacDonald could be a good choice

I would prefer an offensive guy too, but Aaron Glenn would be a decent hire too

The new HC almost has to be an Offense guy unless they hire some D oriented head coach, and are somehow able to convince a bright young offensive minded coach to come here and be the OC. If you want to grab any currently successful NFL OC, or college HC, they will want the head coaching job in Pittsburgh.

Yeah, that's my thinking too. I love defence and love the history of our team, but times have changed.
Right now if you have a defensive minded head coach, when the OC leaves, the entire foundation goes with him. The head coach doesn't have that background in order to install his own system, he's completely reliant on the OC.

Someone like Reid or McVay, much of the offence is from them. So even if the OC leaves, the foundation is still there.

Maybe once upon a time that didn't matter as much, but it's an offensive minded league now. Offences now are innovative and creative. SD thought they were getting a defensive version of McVay, but maybe that just doesn't exist in the current NFL. Belichek is perhaps the greatest coach in NFL history, but look what happened when he lost McDaniels.

Mike McDonald sounds like a promising young coach. But how much of his success has been a result of working with Harbaugh? I don't know and not sure I want to find out. I think the safer option is an offensive minded head coach

Would be nice, but will never happen. He's not leaving for another DC job, especially to a division rival. He's going to get a head coaching job at some point in the near future.

I agree. Lateral moves are very rare. My post was more to highlight what they need at HC and to bring in that type of defensive coordinator to run the defense.

I think having a DC as a head coach is a great thing. Focus on managing the game and running the defense.

Then hire a veteran OC and give him full reigns of the offense. Cohwer/Gailey scenario.

It may be a dated way of thinking. But it still works if you hire the right people.

Why would he make a lateral move to a division rival?

Bubba Ventrone will be the next Steelers coach...book it. He has a Pittsburgh connection (born & raised in Bridgeville).
