I was hoping he would retire Keith Butler will not wait around forever. Maybe Art Rooney will come in at the last minute and force him out like he did with Bruce Arians. Having only 33 sacks is unacceptable using a 3/4 defense as long as the Steelers have been.

The defense wasn't the problem this year, the offense was.

Not ALL the time, the D stunk it up earlier in the year/etc but there were a number of cases where the O was the problem too.

Well, can't really be upset about this, it's not like DL sticking around is a bad thing, just leaves me wondering what will happen to Butler. Another advantage to DL sticking around, besides the fact that his defense is always top ranked, is with the offense still trying to smooth out a new playbook, it's good that we won't be asking the defense to learn new stuff as well. At least we will still have stability on defensive side of the ball.

I'm beginning to believe that DL is one of those guys they'll have to carry off the job.

"You can have my defensive playbook when you pry it from my cold, dead hands!"

Agreed...He doesn't pick the players and has to work with the talent we have (or don't have at times).
Sometimes I think he gets a little too conservative and doesn't blitz as much as I would like and sometimes the DBs seem to be lining up in the stands instead of preventing 1st downs.
BUT, he is still the best coordinator in football and I'll definitely be a little apprehensive when he finally does retire.
We have spent more "quality" picks on the offense than defense in the past few years. We definately will need to reload in some aspects, but that is not on DL.

Were not all the players on D developed under LeBeau?

I also was hoping that he would retire just to see if we can get a new scheme but staying with the 3-4 defense. I little more innovative blitz schemes like we use to use. That cross-dog blitz everyone has picked up. We don't send corners and dropping dlineman. We don't send one side of the defense and the other side drops in there zone that was just vacated. I have some old games on dvd when we were blitzburg and it is HUGH difference. Maybe we just don't have the personnel to run it like that. We shall see.

I was hoping he would return. Only in Pittsburgh people complain about having a top 3 defense year in and year out.

I do think that there needs to be some personnel changes though. Harrison has never been the same since his knee injury and is now going to be sacked by father time sooner than later. Larry Foote had a very good season but is not getting any younger either. Troy just flat out cannot stay on the field. I'd bring him back for one more try and hope that we see the old Troy back. Hampton needs to stay away from the all you can eat buffets and start hitting the gym more. Not getting any younger and his ankles and knees might be ready to disintegrate. Lamar Woodley is a huge concern since he got his big paycheck. Needs to start earning his money cause he was non existent this year. Timmons is looking very promising. Had a great season but needs surrounding support. The CB's are starting to look much better in coverage. Hood is coming around. Heywood and Mclendon too.

Overall with this group of guys Dick LeBeau continues to do a tremendous job each season but they really need a vocal leader. There was no Porter or Farrior type person in the defense to rile the troops and I think that was the missing ingredient this last season.

    Some guys....

Be careful what you widh for, you just might get it.

When we were "Blitzburgh" I recall still getting ate up with a poor secondary. How many superbowls did the D win as "blitzburgh?" Sure the sacks are exciting but our D over the past few years has been championship calibur, especially since our offense goes 3 and out so much and give the opponents good field position.

Look at how many TOs Chicago got this year, yet they still are struggling and need help to get a playoff spot. They can't beat good teams. Their only wins against "good teams" are week one vs. Indy in a rookie QBs first start, a win against the Vikings in week 12, and if you want to you can count a week 4 wins agains the Cowboys. All other good teams the face, they lose.

For everyone who is saying the defense is NOT the problem, you're wrong and you're only looking at stats. Yes we have great stats but the reason why it is said Great defenses wins championships is because they stop the oppoenents from scoring and control the field position and with take-aways can either score themselves or give the ball back to the offense.

Our scoring defense may be 10th but that is mis-leading. In our wins we held the oppoenents to an 13.7 pt avg. In our Losses we gave up an avg score of 24.75. In those losses were the raiders who scored 34pts, they are ranked #29 with an avg of 17.9----
Also the Titans who scored 26, they are 23rd with an avg of 19.5-- and the chargers-scored 34, they're #19 avging 21.7 pt/gm. Even dallas put up 27 against us. The Broncos put 31 on us in the 1st game. Peytons 1st game in over a year with a new team/players and coaches yet we make excuses for Ben being rusty after missing three games mid season.

Our defense isn't getting the turnovers or shall I say creating the turnovers like they should and as long as LeBeau plays our Corners off 10yds to prevent getting beat deep and then making the tackle, which is playing it safe, we'll never see our corners with many ints. Our two leading tacklers- both ILBers haven't created fumbles and our sack artists aren't getting the sacks, creating pressure and/or making them fumble. This was an issue acknowledged by LeBeau in camp and pre-season yet he didn't make the adjustments to put our players in position to create turnovers. Have our players done their part? Nope. James has been hampered by a bad knee and woodley with a hammy and troy with a calf. Maybe if these three had been together and healthy all season we'd be in a different position.

PS- I'm a HUGE LeBeau fan and have been for years but he's playing it safe with his brand of the 3-4 prevent defense. His stats look good- Yardage- but what's important the scoring part is barely in the top one 3rd of the league and turnovers is in the bottom. Also what about Butler. He is a coach coveted by other teams and who is waiting for LeBeau to retire. He could destroy our tradition of great defenses but he could also rejuvenize it to Championship caliber. I'm on the fence with LeBeau returning next year.

I wonder how many of those games did the offense hurt the D with TO's? How many times did they give them a short field to protect? The cushion thing drives me nuts too, I was ranting about it the first 4 games this season but then the defense started playing better. The last 2 games the defense totally shut Dallas and Cincy down, if it weren't for offensive blunders, Dallas would have scored about 13 points and Cincy 6. Can't ask the defense to do any better then that. They also produced 3 TO's the last game and offense did nothing with it.

I am as guilty as many others at looking at stats. And you're right to question how many points were charged against the defense that really wasn't their fault. I just don't have time anymore to look up that much stuff. We have a great defense and they carried the load more so than the offense. My point was, I guess, is everyone was blaming the offense for every loss and the poor season while proclaiming the great of our defense and to me its a whole team effort. Yes our offense didn't pull their weight in an era of offensive football but our defense has to shoulder some of the blame and that starts with LeBeau.
