i have nothing against DL, but im kind of hoping for some change. i would like to see them go to a 4-3. i think you get more consistent qb pressure in the 4-3.

Agree. I have always liked Dick for what he did for our defense but I think its time for some innovation.

Some of the teams best at getting to the QB run a 3-4. The worst teams at getting to the QB seem to run a 4-3.

The Steeler defense is one of the tops in the league, and there are a ton of teams out there that wish they had our D.

Yet, there are several on this board who will find an excuse to marginalize the defense. The obviously do not watch many other NFL games and are still clinging to a different era in the NFL that is now gone.

Good news! Defense is not our issue. DL produced the #1 defense with well below average seasons from 43, 56 and 92, he's the least of our problems

I'd really like to know how they got Butler to stick around, how long will the guy wait to take over? They obviously promised him something last season for him not to take the Colts position. I would have thought it was a one more year arrangement, maybe it was 2 years

It is funny, a year or two ago I was waiting on the edge of my seat hoping DL would return, now I am kind of hoping he doesn't. I don't think he is no good or to blame for this season, but I am kind of ready for a change.

Yep I agree, being one of highest ranked defense's over the course of the years is getting old, I'll be glad when he leaves.

Casey better show up next year a little slimmer.

The high Defensive rankings couldn't stop Begnals 3rd down conversions.

It very well be a lack of football knowledge on my part, but why do so many people expect Butler to turn our defense into a 4-3? Due to him being a great linebackers coach, I find it hard to believe that he would transition from a defense that emphasizes the linebackers to one where the linebackers' roles are minimized (unless you really have no confidence in your linebackers). It seems counter-intuitive to me.

That's kind of funny since most believe DC is his life's work!

I need to dredge up the report, but didn't he come in smaller this year? Even with the injury?

Need to see how the Tamu case goes as well as McClendon.

Time for Hampton to get on with his lifes work, hitting the buffets. He got pushed around all season. McClendon needs to start next year. I wanna see more of Heyward as well.

Coach LeBeau has been a staple for the Pittsburgh Steelers. A great defensive mind.

    But...

The schemes are getting predictable. They have been. To many 3rd down conversions. Pass rush is weak, lack of sacks. Lack of turnovers. Has been for a few years now.

The number 1 ranking has some smoke and mirrors.

If LeBeau comes back so be it. But, I believe Keith Butler was retained to take the reins after this season. Need a fresh approach.

I don't believe this team is going to a 4-3.

The thing about Lebeau's D is that it's predicated on players winning one-on-one match ups. When that happens it's a beauty to watch but of late we just don't have enough players who can win those match ups so they just get blocked most of the time.

:this!: The offense is **** so lets hope DL retires and someone screws up the defense too. Then we ll go from #1 defense to about #28 so the offense has some company.

Yea, i love the smoke and mirrors. The offense gave up 8 turnovers and we only lost by 3. 6 of our losses we re less than 6 points, I think 5 were by 3. Sounds to me like the defense is doing its job and the offense is the problem.

Top ranked defense at what? It's difficult to argue a defense's effectiveness based on stats, but over the past few years, the D hasn't been able to consistently get to the QB and create turnovers.

Against...? I am not arguing your overall point, but that piece of support doesn't hold up well.

Steelers have 1 INT returned for a TD. 19 teams have at least 2. 11 teams have 3.
Steelers do not have a fumble returned for a TD. 18 teams have at least 1. 5 teams have at least 2. The Pats have FOUR.
Steelers have 33 sacks on the season. That's about two per game. They are tied for 17th in this category. These teams have more sacks this season: San Diego, Cleveland, Minnesota, St. Louis. They, and others who also have more sacks, would not usually be considered tough defenses.
Steelers' opponents have lost just 174 total yards on those 33 sacks. That ranks them tied for 27th.
Steelers are ranked 11th in points against, 12th in yards allowed.

I don't see how this defense is in good shape.
