If he can’t get some run with Friermuth out, will be ever? I’m guessing his knees are already an issue.

I like little Heyward and all because he has a lot of heart but they screwed up by cutting Gentry and assuming that Heyward could play FB/HB/TE/blocker. He isn't getting in space, his speed isn't great and he lacks the size to take on an edge rusher. If their plan yesterday didn't survive a 6 point deficit in the 1st half so that the biggest receiving mismatch and blocker could see a lot of snaps, then your plan sucked to begin with. I didn't look in on the game day thread but I can almost bet the McFarland crew made mention of needing to get him involved. They have just sucked at game plans period.

I get the impression that Tomlin thinks he's the smartest man in the world. He always seems to want to protect rookies from themselves. That's fine if it's a QB, but other players don't need sheltering. Throw them out there and let them sink or swim.

Wait weren’t we going up against a really good run defense? Didn’t we draft Washington to run block. Oh I get it having him on the flailed would have been a tell that it’s a run play. This is why Tomlin has to get out of the X’s and O’s And get some boba Gide coordinators in here. Tomlin is best serving as the emotional thermometer of the team. The Dad and Psychologist to the players to teach, motivate and lead. That’s where his strengths lie.

He is a gadget guy, more if a luxury not an everydown player and he is not and never was meant to block. Washington needs to be in there. However even Washington has struggled with blocking this year.

Don't worry we'll get to see Washington in year 3 when he's learned how to tackle, same with Broderick Jones.

He made the 53 on the strength of being a multi-tool player that Tomlin loves and they cut a good blocking TE with some limited catching ability but years in the system. Gentry was never in competition with Heyward or Washington. Heyward is as stated a gadget player and Washington is an intriguing but raw rookie who no matter how he flashed in camp shouldn't have been counted on as jumping into the fire and thriving. In an off season/preseason of hits for Kahn in roster building this was a miss both for Tomlin and Kahn. They now have their best TE on IR, the big raw rookie getting barely 15 snaps in a close game, the gadget guy getting blown up, a lot and some guy whose claim to fame after this season will be he couldn't fall on a blocked punt in the endzone but managed to help get a safety.

If your the Steelers why not let them play you are going nowhere fast. Unless of course you really really love your non losing season identity and thus. When you’re team has no playoff hopes meaning they probably are not going anywhere then why not prepare for the future seems reasonable to me

I just figured they thought.....well if KFP is never going to throw to Him....let's get someone else some snaps that He will throw to.

    So again..

Either Washington isn't fully grasping the play book to the degree that the coaches feel he can contribute or there is still insufficient plays to use him.... something I would find odd.

Regardless... here is an article worth reading. That isn't my biggest question though. At some point... some of these players will begin to turn on the play calling. Mason Cole snatching his helmet odd against Houston was nothing more than a preview of what's to come.

Disappointing thus far. I know it typically takes rookie tight ends longer than most positions to adapt to the NFL.. but with Pat going down, you'd at least want to see the big guy in there getting playing time. Something is "odd."

Watching how the Lions used LaPorta last night, and many other teams in the league, just highlights the fact of how little the Steelers use the tight end. Even when Muth was healthy.

There is no indication that his knee is slowing him down. His route tree in college was limited, so it was always going to take time for him to contribute in that area. Often, tight ends take a while to develop. It is way too early to make any long-term determinations about Washington.

We could have Gronk on the roster and we wouldn't throw it to him.

Never seen a year where Tight Ends are so totally ignored in an offense.

i'm telling you all it was to get jones on the field as the extra blocker instead of washington. even though they could have used washington to actually catch a pass with play action. they have heard rumblings of getting jones on the field so this is their answer. always a day late and a dollar short. no innovation of how we can use our weapons to improve. it's always one thing at a time and 2 weeks late in doing it. on it goes though. expect nothing different on a short week.
