It's a team game and all but Watt hasn't done anything in the playoffs, one career playoff sack and no wins, I would go with Mean Joe.

Love TJ, but until he starts putting rings on his fingers and contributing to Lombardis, he’s not in the discussion of best Steelers defensive player of all time.

Excellent post. Imagine him playing on those SB teams. Insane. He can’t control us getting to SB’s.

If you watch any of the talking heads shows, Undisputed, GMFB, The Herd, First Things First and Speak.... it's Micah Parsons, Bosa and/or Garrett. Watt is pretty much an afterthought.

This is the way I look at it.

You look at TJ and he doesn't look like the manster he really is. Some OT's drawf him.
    But then the whistle blows.
He owns his side of the field, he influences plays.
Then when you least expect it, he drops into coverage and grabs your pass and is headed to the goal line.
He wrecks offenses. Even KC has much respect for him. I've heard Andy Reid yell at this team about keeping an eye on Watt.
So I do gush, "TJ Watt is the greatest ever!" but it's just praise.

Those 70's Steeler defenses were loaded.
I happen to favor 'The Count' as the best ever. I spent many times on the sidelines watching him destroying offenses and inflicting pain.
I also greatly admire Mean Joe Green who just trashed the OL.
Those teams will always be my most favorite of all time.

TJ could probably loose a tooth or two and he already has that menacing glare... Lambert scared the crap out of people in the stands with that look. He made babies cry.
Harrison deserves credit too.. the guy was built like a 3500 Dodge Ram.

What the heck, there are a ton of Steeler guys that think are great.
Imagine a LB, 250/260lbs that could run a 4.4 (They clocked him at 4.9 but he played like 4.4) named Kirkland, should have been nicknamed runaway train.
He put a lick on Emmit Smith that had him going to the wrong sideline.

The list goes on and on.

he wrecked them in the first Q - but our offense sucked, led by DJ dropping a very KEY pass.

I have never understood the logic of determining the greatness of the individual based on team accomplishments. How much better could Dan Marino have played quarterback? How much better can Watt play than he already is?

For a player of his caliber the team needs more from him, in the Super Bowl run of 2008 Woodley had 2 sacks in every playoff game .

I knew someone would bring up the people Joe had around him. I prefer to think since he and Andy Russell were the only two holdovers from when Noll took over, Greene was responsible for much of the success his defensive teammates enjoyed. Joe was also a defensive tackle and was routinely double and trip teamed. His unofficial sack total (sacks weren't an official NFL stat until 1982) was 77 1/2. That's insane for a right defensive tackle in a 3-4 defense. Greene was also durable, playing in 181 out of a possible 190 games. Anyway, I acknowledge Watt is probably the best defensive player in the game right now. But I stand by Joe Greene.

Woodley was almost exclusively single blocked, which means he was blocked only by the offensive tackle. There is a big difference between beating one man across from you, and beating two or three men trying to block someone like Watt faces.

Watt is the guy that requires multiple players to block him, so others are only blocked by one player. If he was only blocked by one man all the time, he would rack up an incredible number of sacks.

Some players are so great and so dominant that they require more players to block them than mortal men. The reason he doesn't have huge numbers is because other teams game plan to try to take TJ Watt out of the game. Stopping Watt is the #1 priority of the offensive game plan. If that means altering formations and having tight ends and running backs helping to block TJ Watt to slow him down...that's what they do. If it means bringing tight ends in motion to his side to block him, that's what they do. There are many times Watt is being blocked by an offensive tackle, a tight end, and a running back. It could be two tight ends. Sometimes they line up tight ends outside the right tackle which allows the tackle to take away the inside rush, when TJ tries to go outside, the tight end helps to block him. Then, sometimes there is a running back to also chip him if he gets past the first two.

That's what TJ Watt faces on a regular basis because he is such a disruptive force.

Ahem. They already had Mansfield and Walden on the roster, and the 1969 draft netted them Greene, Kolb, Greenwood and Hanratty.
