Crazy Clip I watched on Youtube today. What is Neil O'Donnell doing; taking a safety at the 35.

I guess it is 4th down and inches, 16 seconds to go and they are afraid a punt will get blocked. Up by 6 points, so they decide to take a Safety from the 35 yard line.

I still think it would have been better if O'Donnell ran the ball backwars to take more time off the clock, but he may have fallen down and then the ball would have gone over on downs; I guess.

This Play has to be in Matt Canada's playbook.

"Moral of the story: instead of punting, throw the ball backwards as far as you can!"

If they are that worried about the punt being blocked, then it's a very smart play. Not sure why you think it's a bad call. There's very little down side. Only thing that could really go wrong is if the punter completely pooches the kick after the safety, but that doesn't happen often and the other team would still need a TD regardless of where they are on the field.

I never said it was a bad call, just a crazy play. I have never seen anyone just turn around and throw the ball as hard as they can backwards through the goal posts. I have seen teams take a safety at the 1 or 2 yard line like this, just never from their own 35. At first I thought this was an incomplete pass, but then I remembered because it is going backwards it is ruled a fumble.

I still think O'Donnell should have run backwards through the end zone to take more time off the clock.

No because he probably would have been caught before he reached the end zone.
