Bad offense? The D is actually worse!

No matter how you want to measure Pgh's D, it is every bit as bad - or worse - than the Steelers O, but no one is talking about that.

We are 30th in D; nearly dead last in many important categories, yet no one is talking about that. Where are all the chants for "Fire Austin?" Or, more realistically, "Fire Tomlin?"

Our D is soft, flimsy, weak, power puff, listless, lifeless, lethargic and limp. But no one is talking about that. Everyone is so mono focused on the pathetic offense.

The entire TEAM is soft. And that lies at the feet of the head coach, period.

Steelers are the 3rd worst team in giving up defensive yards. And yet we only hear cheers to "fire Canada." Huh?

Agree, can't believe Pickett was taking most of the blame after last week.
The defense is a friggin joke.

And let's not forget who is at the center of the D: Mike Tomlin. And with all the priority and $ spent on the D this is what we get? Pathetic.

I just watched the D again last night. They are wore out, but there's no excuse for some of what they let happen. LBs getting totally blocked by Wrs, and TEs. It was sad. Also the Texans didn't run a very complex scheme....probably because of the Rookie, but they executed it well.

Everyone wants to focus on the dumpster fire offense all the while the defense is just as responsible.

Yeah I agree that the defense is just awful. They are lucky that the offense is so bad too...I still think our offense is way worst since I don't remember the last time we won a game when our defense was average or bad in a game....The win vs Browns in week 2 was because of the 2 TDs by the defense

Like I said,Austin is very lucky to have Canada on the other side of the ball, the defense is just pathetic and outside of 2019 and maybe 2020 our defense have been garbage since the moment Polamalu was no longer dominant especially against good offense but no,our offense is still the worst unit

We are bottom 3 in yards given up on D, close to as bad in points given up. The defense is putrid, and it's supposed to be Tomlin's area of expertise. Pathetic. The entire team is sh-t, thanks to Tomlin and Rooney. Or are we gonna still blame Ben 3 years later? 6 years without a single win in the playoffs. Oh, but Tomlin hasn't had a single losing season, so we got all those rings for that accomplishment.

Steelers D is the least of their problems. Hard to be a top defense when your offense goes 3 and out all game. Plus the loss of Cam hurts a lot. As usual, the run defense is the weakest link, always seems strange saying that for a Steelers defense.

Even with that though they are no where near as bad as the offense.

I doubt the Browns would say the Steelers are soft on defense

Agree. Canada is taking all the heat and he deserves much of it, but Teryl Austin has been a disappointment as DC. Tomlin hasn’t helped. Take TJ away from our defense and we’re probably 0-4 right now.

The D isn’t good against the run or the pass. Cam killed the middle of the D Line and our cornerbacks are a fing joke.

That being said the offense is as bad I’ve ever seen a pro offense look.

    The O Line is horrendous
We have no weapons especially with DJ hurt
Najee looks like he is wearing cement boots 80% of the time
Kenny can’t read a Pop Warner defense.

We have the worst OC to ever be in the NFL

I agree, but I was watching just the D on the all 22 , and its was bad. I don't know if they are already worn out, or they get deflated by watching our offense, but that D against the Texans was bad, and it wasn't because the Texans scheme up some awesome stuff. You talk about simple. Texans we're running simple stuff, but they were executing it very well. I'm telling You they were blocking our, Lbs many times with Wrs, and TEs, and CJ was playing very well. It was sad.

I know the 3 and outs don't help as the game goes on, but both Houston and SF scored on their first three drives of the game. The D isn't gassed at that point. This D is soft against the run and not good in coverage. It only works if the pass rush gets to the QB. Basically, the opposing O needs to figure out how to contain the edge rushers and then they can do whatever they want to this D. And after that negative review of the D, it's still not as bad as the O.

Our D is designed as a big play defense, not a stifling defense. If we don't get sacks or annoy the QB enough to make mistakes, we don't have the scheme to just shut people down. And I think that high risk/high reward approach is a function of our lousy offense, as if the defense doesn't take risks and get opportunities, we don't have much of a chance at all.

Cam's loss is huge and now Cam's replacement Leal is out. I read they are going to replace Leal at DT with Benton.

If Benton is moving to DT, I would love for them to get Fehoko some snaps at NT. I liked the pickup of Fehoko this offseason, because the man wants to play NT and shut down the run. I have never liked Adams at NT and was hoping Benton would eventually win over that starting D-Line role position.

I still think if we can get Cam back, we will have a very strong D-Line with Cam - Benton - Larry O.

Cam isn’t coming back anytime soon and the season will likely be over by the time he does. Father Time has caught up here I think he is on a steep decline from here on out.

I've been saying it. Our D looks great when they make splash plays. And sometimes, they get a lot of them in a game.

But on average downs, they can't seem to stop anyone and get off the field. Yes, I know. They're tired from our offense sucking. Then why are they tired already in the 1st quarter???

We don't stop teams. They misfire and stop themselves. Receivers are running free all day long. Every catch seems to be uncontested. When we get pressure on the QB, we seem ok. But that's not consistent (and to be fair, it never can be. For anyone). Our rush defense is abysmal. And God forbid we lose TJ...

And none of this is new.

They are tired at the beginning of games because teams usually go about 12 plays 75 yards on them to start. I think the Texans scored 5 tds on the opening drive last week (4 were called back because of penalty)

D looks terribly soft, as others have said if they are not getting pressure the whole defence falls apart and their opponents seem to be able to do whatever they want. Losing Heyward definitely hurt and they miss Sutton as well, he wasn’t elite but he was solid and I can’t understand why they let him go in free agency. Then you have the offence that puts them back in the field again and again. That has been happening for years

They improved as the year went on last year and that may happen again as Cam gets back in and JPJ gets more snaps.
