How does Kenny miss Connor Heyward in the back of the endzone?

I have to watch it again. I saw the receiver coming open late, but I didn't notice anybody open initially, which is why he bailed.

If you are throwing from the shotgun on fourth-and-one, it should be something quick. If it's not, that's just terrible play design. That's how it should work with most quarterbacks, especially one who is struggling when initial reads aren't open the way Pickett has been this season. Also, assuming he would have time to get to his third or fourth option given how poorly the line pass protected would also be stupid. So either the play didn't work as designed and he chose the wrong way to improvise or it was an incredibly stupid design.

Of course, putting Pickett in shotgun in that situation was definitely stupid.

The clip is in my post. Had Heyward right away or if he didn’t like that option he could have to stood in the pocket and he would have had Pickens coming across the middle. He felt the pressure up the middle and bailed early. He doesn’t trust this line at all. Bailing on the pocket has been a problem from the start, was doing it last season as well.

Here’s the clip where he forced a bad throw to Robinson with Conner coming open. He could have easily pulled this pass down and threw to Conner.

He blew it, again. Don’t know what the heck is wrong with him.

Edit: I watched that again and I didn’t account for the defender in Kennys face, he didnt have time to pull that down. He still has been missing an unacceptable amount of open receivers.

Kenny pickoff had a very low wonderlic. He can’t read defenses. He’s not in his 6th season ina weak acc with Jordan Addison carrying him anymore . Pickett is a bum

His biggest flaw is that he bails to the outside every time, and bails on fairly clean pockets. The play in question he needed to keep his cool and step up into the hole between Jones and Seumalo. He either runs for it or buys himself enough time to find someone to throw to. He's bailing on plays he shouldn't. He has flashes, but if he bails on the pocket all the time, he will never progress.

If you watch it frame by frame before he threw it, it initially appears that Robinson is breaking open wide and the defender on Heyward is in his pocket reading KP's eyes. Sees that Pickett is going Robinson so he drives on that and Heyward gets open after the ball is thrown since his defender bit on the lower route. Robinson stops his route for whatever reason (might've just been a curl and if that's the case it was a bad read) and probably would've been open if he ran hard to the front left pylon. Robinson either gave up on the route or Pickett forced a ball into an area that was never going to be open. Hard to tell which is which. If its the first one, its a good read imo. If the second, its awful.

I’m not giving up yet but I fear you may be right. Early reports are he won’t be lost for the season which is great from a developmental standpoint. They will have a lot better idea going into the draft.

One key thing to remember, Khan didnt draft him, not his boy. Sliver of hope should Pickett continue to stink out the joint all season but it’s just a sliver, I don’t have much hope that they would bail on him that quickly. He will be 26 though which is another key thing to remember when making the decision to move on or not.

Terry Bradshaw, in his first three years, threw 31 TDs and 58 INTs. Shoulda kicked him to the curb. He doesn't have "it". He'll never be an NFL quarterback! It's not how you start, it's how you finish.

Agree he made his mind up and locked in on Robinson and that ball was going there. He wasn't patient to see that actually develop. The line half the time is a sieve so he's bailing constantly and sometimes when he doesn't have to. If he doesn't correct that instinct its game over for his career in the NFL. You have to be able to stand there and be ok with guys sometime falling at your feet or getting pushed right by you and not panic. Some guys can do it and some guys can't.

I don't think we give up either, its just pointing out that it's what is holding him back. A huge part of whether or not we want to stick with him will come down to coaching decisions. I don't think ownership has the balls to send Tomlin packing, but if they do we could have a new HC and OC (we are going to have a new OC regardless). I am sure that will play into our decision too.

He got happy feet after our first few weeks of the season. He needs to trust that he will be fine, move a tiny bit to buy the extra split seconds, and keep his eyes down field. Or just make the decision to tuck it and run inside. He can't continue to bail outside. If he does, he's a lost cause.

I was listening to scouts eye view with Matt Williamson the other day. Apparently Pickett is 4th in the league(completion %) when under pressure and last in the league when not under pressure

This is what I was thinking. Somehow before the ball was even snapped both defenders knew that Kenny was going to throw the ball to Robinson, so they both jumped on Robinson and completely ignored Heyward on the route.

To me it looked like a screw up on defense as both defenders went to guard the same guy, but if somehow Kenny tipped where he was going to throw the ball even before the ball was snapped, it is just bad QB play.

How is it apples to oranges? Both are 1st round picks, quarterbacks, have had moments of brilliance, the fan base alternately loves, then hates them. Nobody knows how Kenny will turn out any more than anyone knew how Terry would turn out. In spite of what all the "experts" on here think, Kenny COULD turn out to be the next Montana! Or, he could turn out to be the next Bubby Brister. Give him some time, and a real O.C.

Only generations apart… btw noone said get rid if KFP. He’s struggling really bad, which is obvious. Some is KFP some of course is oc.
Btw im no expert or ever claimed to be an expert. I have watched over 50 yrs of football, sometimes im right most of the time im wrong!
BTW , in my honest opinion, in which i hope im wrong, KFP doesn’t have the it factor. Happy feet, no pocket presence, panics. Hopefully that can be fixed. And well documented he has problems with zone defenses.

The entire bunch on the right didn't fool anyone. It's the same concept flipped that they run all the time. 2 took off conner comes along the first down line and Najee drifts back toward the first down line.
