Why did we cut urbak for veterans we knew were backups at best. That was a bad decision. Now he is a good starter in nfl and we use draft picks to replace him.

Yep he just signed a pretty hefty extension with the Bills.

He's taken his time to get to that starting calibre, though, and was only starting on the Bills early because they had torrid back ups. I'm not sure he would have had the same development here.

That said, I was very disappointed when we cut him - even though he didn't show much while he was here.

His last name is spelled Urbik. I think it just took time to come into his own, he really didn't look good during his time here. But it sometimes takes a little while, for an NFL lineman to pick these things up. If you remember a few years back we had quite a talented roster, so 53 spots where filled rather quickly. Should have kept him over Essex thats for sure. But, you will make mistakes.

We made worse mistakes. Such as letting Mike Vrabel go and not keeping Woodson for a few more years.

It was a mistake, no question. Yes, he was unbelievably bad when we cut him, but he'd only been here for 1 season + 2 preseasons. That was it. He needed more time. There was no reason not to keep him another year and see if he filled out his potential.

That said, I like our OG situation just fine now, except for the injuries.

Oh come on with the Woodson thing. There was more to it than that. There was some animosity on his part as well.

I don't agree it was a bad move as such. I would have liked to have seen him stay around, simply because we seemed to give up on quite a high draft pick very early. However, he was far from spectacular at Buffalo at first - good, but not spectacular. As I've said before, he likely wouldn't have had the same development here. You could well say the same thing as John Kuhn at Green Bay. I wanted him to stay here, but if he had, he likely would have been severely under-utilised, then cut.

He is a guard they are never spectacular. But why get rid of a young OLineman to keep a veteran you know is a backup at best. I just do not understand it. Urbik when drafted was a get the job done ugly guy.

This is where the front office and Tomlin have been missing to build depth. We should not have had to draft a guard with a first round pick. We should have been able to get a Lb in that spot.

I believe they kept Essex because he could be a back up at G / T.

Same reason we cut Vrable. We had too many other linebackers we were fond of

It was a mistake one way or another. If you looked at Beachum from this preseason, and assumed he never played during this year, and he had looked the same NEXT year he would have been cut too. The reality is....Urbik was never really given a chance here.

he didn't start right away at buffalo either. he went in when there was a rash of injuries and didn't play all that well, but their injuries mounted and he stayed. now he signs a bigger contract even though he still might not be that good of a player but bodies are needed. sound familiar? kemoeatu, colon, essex, starks? i don't think he's headed for the pro bowl anytime soon. but hey good for him.
