Let’s use John Doe as an example. Let’s say his team decides to cut him with two years remaining on his contract. Take the remaining prorated bonus ($2M per year times two, or $4M), and take his base salary, $1M. Subtract the remaining signing bonus from the base. The result is minus $3M, which means that John would cost his team $3M in dead money (money that essentially goes to waste and can’t be used on another contract.)
This is why many teams wait to cut a player in the final year on their contract, as usually the base salary is significantly higher than the remaining prorated portion of the signing bonus.

If a team cuts a veteran player after June 1, the remaining signing bonus will be spread over two years rather than accelerate into the current year’s cap. For example, John Doe is cut in year 2 of his contract with $2M left on his signing bonus and a base salary of $1M before June 1. His team is hit with dead money ($1M base salary less $2M signing bonus equals $1M in dead cap space).

If John is cut AFTER June 1, only $1M of his remaining $2M signing bonus hits the current cap year with the remaining million being dumped into the next year’s cap. Thus, if you subtract the $1M signing bonus from the $1M scheduled base, John Doe ends up costing his team ZERO against the current year’s cap; however, in the next year’s cap, he’ll end up costing his team $1M against the cap.

If a player is traded or waived, any remaining prorated signing bonus money automatically accelerates against the current year’s cap. However, the old team is no longer responsible for any base salaries that will be paid to the player; that responsibility is absorbed by the new team. In essence, a trade can create dead money against a team’s cap.

thanks for the info. by the way you said after june 1st on both scenario's. don't mean to pick but though you might want to fix it to clarifiy.

didn't it used to be that if cut after june 1, the remaining signing bonus could be halved over the two years? is that still how it works?

But again I am not a cap " specialist " .. I know the rules but guys like Kahn always seem to have some hidden loopholes they work around things with ... lots of great articles on the cap all over the web the language can kind of lull you half to sleep at times making it a little tough to comprehend ( at least for me ) but I never proclaimed to be a a real studious kind of guy either maybe it wont be as tough for some others ...

I am old , half blind and bore easily and would much rather be playing the game than critiquing it .... but see point 1 at the start of this sentence LOL

right now I am trying to figure out what I did with the tape on Billy Price ( an ohio state prospect that just finished his senior year at Austintown Fitch high school ) this kid is gonna be a star DT for somebody in a few years ) Hack you seen him play ?

had a couple pms asking what about Harrison and his 10+ mill cap hit .....

here is the direct dope in regards to his situation as I see it ...
ok here is the scoop on Harrison

Harrison in 2013 is scheduled to make 6.57 million but his cap hit will be 10.035 million if they release him prior to June 1 it will leave them with 4.93 million in dead money on the books for a player they no longer have if they waited till after June 1 , it only saves them 1.4 million in 2013 but they take the rest of the hit in 2014 but have a roster spot to fill that would incur additional money and most likely less production than a healthy Harrison ....

sometimes you have to eat your mistakes with contracts because it is just not beneficial enough to make a move ...

3-4 rush linebackers are not a dime a dozen these days with so many teams playing the 3-4 a decent one will cost you 5 Mill a year or more so cutting Harrison costs you nearly 5 million in dead money you pay a FA to come in to take his place another 5 million and you may as well of Just kept your guy ( who is probably better than who you replace him with ) ...that is unless you believe Worilds is able to take his place and be more productive then instead of spending more money you have to spend a fairly high round draft pick to have a decent backup again ...getting into the draft is not really for this part of the forum but it is my opinion that we need to spend the first 3 rounds of the next draft solidifying our S spots ( 3 of our top Safeties are 31+ and 1 is a Free agent ) and an ILB to replace the aging Larry Foote 33 next year ( Spence is no lock to ever return at this point ) .....

Harrison will unequivocally be in B&G in 2013 unless he retires on his own , it will be far to costly to release him ..if they do release him it will be prior to the 2014 season where they have the last portion of his signing bonus that can be spread over 2 years instead of two portions of that bonus to be spread over the same 2 year period , hence far less dead money doing it in 2014 and you still retain his services 1 more season in the process

i think he has offseason surgery and comes back next year. we have been stockpiling rush OLB'ers a bit. robinson, carter, worilds, the kid from pitt that got hurt may also be back. if james can get the knee fixed or cleaned up, he can be much more effective next year. it would be a mistake to get rid of him.

next year is the big hurddle though. bens hit next year is huge. in 2014 the new TV deal should kick in raising the cap level and the top draft picks are at a pretty set amount now.

what level guys like JH,troy and clark are playing at by 2014 though will be up in the air. thats what hurts being able to keep some of these guys paywise. when will they decline is only a guess.

as i said before we should gain about 9.5 mil. of dead money we are currently eating this year. kemo, hines, farrior, smith. even max counts 2 mil. of this. we shouldn't be near this in 2013.

your gonna love this kid in a couple years , reason I asked if you ever seen him is if Memory serves you at times get a chance to see some of these Youngstown area HS players , I am still in Pa. but its a 45 min drive so I try and hit a few games a year over that way some good players and some big rivalries

bump because many think we have cap room in 2013 and think dropping a player who is not even under contract in 2013 is going to save us cap room ....

hard to be taken seriously when you do not know the facts

no dwins i understand that. foote is not 3 mil we get in extra money. it 3 mil we won't have to pay out at his position is what i am talking about, on the defensive side. 60 mil. defense. 60 mil. offense. ben takes a third of the offenses money right off the bat. cutting troy and harrison won't make up that 15+ mil. we need, with their dead money hits. who's left? woodley, timmons? do we rob the defense to help make payroll?

I haven't gotten out to see as many games the last few years as I used to DWIN.

First and foremost Ben will restructure again.....after that I have no idea what they will do...LOL

I'm really not to concerned...Omar and Colbert will finagle the numbers and the Steelers will remain mostly intact.

probably right , they normally come through .. but this seems to be the worse case in recent memory to finagle through

we sure can't depend on will allen to stay healthy. matt elam would look good in B&G.

beachum, gilbert, adams at tackle. draft hugh thornton to start at LG and he can also play LT. much cheaper and more talented way to go. we can absorb the dead hit from colon if we go this young on the line. i like legs but he kind of ties there hands at guard. warren may not be back either, i hate to say.

i also don't see sly back as a LB. or johnson. or foote. there is alot of talent at LB this year in the draft. i do agree we will be much younger.

we will have to redo bens contract first and foremost.

ike possibly. he's still playing at a high enough level. i still would like to see his eventual move to FS.

lewis' contract may get interesting. i think we have to keep him, someway.

we need to get through to 2014 when the cap should go up.
