I would be interested to see if the number of returns actually goes down after this year. I'm sure coaches will be harping on field position, but just like that guy who always seems to field punts inside his own 10 trying to make a play, I see the same thing happening here.

So now kickers have to learn how to kick line drives towards the sideline inside of the 25. Kickers stats are going to suck. Wait a minute ... are they referring to just kickoffs or punts as well?!

    I mean...

If there is a silver lining, the NFL Competition Committee stated that this is going to be a one year trial run. The League has not officially made the switch permanent.

That said... who knows what the NFL Owners will think of such an idea one year from today; other weird changes no less.

I don't watch much college football. Too many things to do on my Saturdays. Still a stupid rule though. Making the game ever so soft one rule at a time. If everything has to be about safety as the most important concern then our Sundays might as well be spent just watching Chess tournaments.

TBH, when the NCAA instituted this rule a few years ago, I had all the same thoughts on how it would ruin the game…. But in reality,( IMO) I don’t think it’s negatively affected the game.

There is a comic strip (can't remember name) where a retired NFL player has bought an NFL franchise in Hawaii, the Honolulu Tiger Sharks. His wife is designing the uniforms and it's just like your picture.

Ramon Foster thinks this is going to create a lot of "Pooch" kicks, where the ball goes very high and comes down around the 35 and if the player calls for a fair catch, the ball would then go back to the 25 per the new rule.

I don't even know if a kicker can kick the ball off the tee like this?

After watching some youtube videos on Pooch Kicks it may be interesting as the kicking team has a chance to recover the ball like an onside kick.

If the NFL rule is in effect, if the Receiving team would have called for a fair catch at the 32 then the ball would have gone back to the 25.

This new rule could definitely backfire on the NFL as the Pooch Kick would make the kickoff even wilder than before as players are racing down the field trying to recover the ball. Every kickoff would turn into an onside kick.

You could do the 4th and 15 option that the XFL has used.

I didn't know that there was human being living in America who hasn't seen that movie around 100 times. It is on continuously around a week before Christmas.

The fair catch has to be made inside the 25 to get the ball there. A fair catch beyond the 25 places the ball at the spot of the catch.

    Ok no Pooch kick.

But what the hell does "placekick without a tee" mean. I can't ever remember seeing a kickoff that the ball was not on a tee.

Is a "Placekick without a tee" a FG attempt?

I've seen kickers lay the ball flat on the ground and make a squib kick before. Usually when they have a lead late in the game and are trying to kill off the last few seconds to prevent a kickoff return.
