Lest people forget how well he played during the second half of the 2021 season. That hamstring injury he had earlier in the 2022 season did him no favors. Him coming back prematurely compounded the issue.

Best of luck Ahkello!! :applaud: Wish it would have worked out but I hope your next NFL destination yields success! :herewego:

I thought they would at least give him the opportunity to compete for a job in training camp. He was good late in 2021 and last year's struggles may have been due to injury.

That said, this saves the team $4 million in cap space. If it helps them add another player or contributes to a long-term deal for Highsmith, I'm all for it.

This is the 2nd CB they have shown the door recently. First Maulet and now Witherspoon.

Did they sign a few CBs that I am unaware of? An old man and a Rookie are now the starting CBs for 2023?

I think both Maulet and Witherspoon would have played significant time in Defensive packages in 2023.

I was hoping Porter would not have to be a Day 1 starter as he has a lot of work to do in learning how to keep his hands off of the WRs in the NFL.

They also signed Chandon Sullivan, who is likely Maulet's replacement in the slot. Peterson, Porter, and Trice all seem likely to make the roster. I wouldn't have minded seeing them hold on to Witherspoon, but given the opportunity to save $4 million on the cap, I understand letting him go now.

Maybe...Use that cap savings to sign Kyle Van Noy, and have a legitimate backup OLB?

This..I am not going to begin to compare what they hàve to what he brings. One could argue to what amounts to who really knows, what I do see is Omar being far more aggressive in his approach than we are used to. The end result will speak for itself, We knew he was a CAP guru, but never thought he would be so proactive. This off-season has not been Steeler typical, plenty to talk about for sure.

    Silly question,

Why wouldnt this wait until the end of preseason because the injury factor is always the wildcard.

Obviously there is a lot more to this that what I see a snapshot of.

Who knows, but you only have 90 slots and they are up against that now. There might be other scrubs they could let go, but the CAP space plans may have made this necessary. If they felt he was not in their long term plan it was a class move to free him to pursue other opportunities.

They have four million reasons. It's all about clearing cap space.

Isn't Levi Walllace still on the roster? He should be an adequate #3 behind Porter and Peterson.

I wonder if Trice blew everyone away at Rookie Mini-Camp? He fell to the 7th round because of his injury history, so maybe he was able to show them he will be 100% ready to play in 2023.

You figured Porter would be in the mix for the CB rotation this year, but if Trice turns out to be Everyone's "Camp Phenom" maybe they can afford to lose both Maulet and Witherspoon.

Trice being in the 7th Round is more to do with his injury history. His play on the field easily warranted him a Top 75 pick. If anything, Cory Trice is essentially a low risk roll of the dice; potential starter or potential dud at the cost of nothing. For me though, he can be a starter... provided he stays healthy.

All this said, I suspect it is either Trice, another possible injury (though an injury waiver would have been announced) or something else at play. Remember that Jamir Jones was released earlier; only to be realized that he was under arrest. I hope Ahkello did not meet the same fate.

Now i wish we would have kept sutton. Not that witherspoon and mullet were great. But with what their cap was, would have made sutton contract easy to be done.

Witherspoon was not worth what his contract was

They cut him so he has a chance to catch on elsewhere

I’m not going to go back and rewatch games to confirm, but my recollection is that even in 2021 he was effective in zone when he could play a location and keep the ball in front of him, and less effective in man coverage. We are becoming more and more man coverage heavy. Let him find a home with a zone-heavy team, and he may still be able to start.

Reminds me of a joke I heard once…

Did you hear about the actress who was just arrested for stabbing her boyfriend with a fork?

No, that’s terrible! What was her name?

Oh, I can’t remember…her first name was Reese. Reese something or other.

    Witherspoon??!!

    No…WITH HER FORK!

    :lolol::lolol::lolol::lolol::lolol:

The season can’t get here soon enough…
