It seems that Omar Khan is fluent in Spanish. Got an invitation out of a kicking camp in Mexico City.

There's got to be a punter out there somewhere that is more consistent than what we have now. It is time for a change and we need to make that change soon

Steelers signed Braden Mann from the Jets last month. He has averaged 46.9 yards a punt in his 3 year career.

Adam Korsak out of Rutgers is at rookie training camp, also. Averaged 44.0 this year and 45.8 last year.

He can hit the long ones and is considered consistent.

Pittsburgh Steelers' scouts watched closely on an April morning in Mexico City, kicker Alfredo Gachúz nailed his 58-yard field goal attempt to end what was an impressive and consistent showing. This was the type of talent the Steelers had gone abroad looking for.

Mark Gorsack, who's scouted for the Steelers for 29 years, was joined by Raul Allege (two-time Super Bowl-winning kicker born in Mexico) and Shaun Suisham, former Steelers kicker for a kicking camp put together by the team in their neighbor country.

What they witnessed from Gachúz was impressive enough for Steelers GM Omar Khan to give him an emotional call to inform him they were inviting him to the team's rookie minicamp.

In his collegiate career playing for the Borregos de Estado de México, Gachúz became the all-time leading kicker in points scored with 321 points to his name and the all-time leader in field goals scored. He owns the longest field goal record having nailed a 61-yard attempt as a Borrego.

Gachúz's talent didn't stop shining in college, however. As a pro, he's taken over Mexico's pro football league, the LFA (Liga de Fútbol Americano). He was recently drafted by the CFL earlier in May.

I wonder if this guy would qualify for one of those special International Player roster spots? These Int'l Roster Spots do not count against the teams 53-man roster.

I didn't see where the Steelers were hosting one of the Int'l Players this year. I can vaguely remember a TE on the roster from a few year ago who had the Int'l Player designation.
International Player Pathway program adds eight players to NFL rosters for 2023 season

I saw that earlier this week. Doing something like this is more than looking for a kicker however. He played on mexican college and pro teams, to reach out like this helps build the NFL brand. Hell if he is good enough and the PS is still expanded this year the team (or some other) can keep him around and see what he can do. He obviously has to have talent to invite him, but (and maybe I'm wrong) to have a GM who speaks fluent Spanish call and give the invite speaks more of league marketing than what a normal rookie invite would bring, lol.

Just out of curiousness I have to wonder if the Steelers set up some film crew for this phone call? Seems rather odd that they reach out to him while cooking and have such close up footage.

I subscribe to the Jimmy Johnson approach to kickers.
Shank a punt, or miss a FG... you might get cut on the airplane ride home.

You can never have enough kickers: If you cut said kicker on the plane, you want to be able to know and call his replacement.
