Why was Maulet released?

I wonder, with the new faces at cornerback, if maybe the Steelers asked Maulet to switch to strong safety and he didn’t want to do it and asked to be released? It might be a logical move, he was decent against the run but not good in coverage. He is also approaching 30 and the law of the Serengeti applies to defensive backs. One step slower and you are eaten. A number of aging CBs have made that switch, but it involves admitting that you are aging.
Rod Woodson did it in his mid 30s and played several more years at a high level. Just a thought….

I think he sold his soul, so we had to release him.

Contractual agreements from what I could gather.

However, this just makes our Slot CB room worse. I seriously do not want Patrick Peterson starting there and Chandon Sullivan is the only player available.

    Steelers agreed to disagree.

Will be interesting to see how the secondary comes together.

supposedly he wanted a contract extension and was denied. So he asked for his release. A bit short sighted imo, but that’s just me. Make nearly 2 million or hope someone else will pay you more? Hmmm that’s a tough decision.

levi wallace, chandon sullivan, demonte kazee, patrick peterson are all capable of playing the slot. with the talent they have at DB all these parts can be moved around and i believe that will be a strength keeping offenses guessing. neal and muse can add a lot of coverage ability too as a safety/linebacker role and i do expect we use them in that role. blitzing from that position could help with the OLB backup role as well. just bringing pressure from different spots. all this should be able to take the place of maulet's abilities. if this all comes together and they use these packages to their advantage we could through fits to opposing offenses. :smiley1::cool:

Interesting no one mentioned the reports of him requesting to be released.

    No hostages right...

There is only one situation where I would have done the same. That is if I was guaranteed a job paying me more. Tell me how many guarantees there are in life again

Being offered nearly 2 million dollars, I would have been the first one at the facility and the last one to leave if I had his talent or lack there of compared to others in the league at his position. Guy will be asking if someone wants fries with that in 2 years.

Maulet saw the writing on the wall when they signed Sullivan, and drafted two CBs, not a big loss he's not a guy you want on the field on passing downs.

We here this all the time, switch from CB to S when you get older. Rod did it, Ronnie Lott played both at all pro level. There probably have been more, but it is not done as often or as easily as stated. I have heard Pros talk about this, the positions and the way they are played are very different. It takes both physical and mental adjustments some guys just cannot make.
