We only signed 7 UDFA and drafted only 7 players. I don’t believe we’re at 90 yet.

Since we have room on the roster are The Steelers holding a few spots open of some XFL Players when their season ends soon??

I don't know why more players don't sign on with the XFL and USFL rather than signing a Future Reserve contract with the NFL.

How much does a Future reserve contract pay in the offseason, before camp even starts? Compared that to a player who plays in the XFL/USFL, and then signs with an NFL team before camp starts?

Getting playing time and exposure should count for something, but then again, like I said, I don't know how much an NFL player makes during the offseason; before camps start and they are at home.

Like Mason Rudolph, would he have been better playing this offseason in the XFL/USFL and then signing with an NFL team before camp starts, rather than taking the offseason off?

Is the NFL allowed to sign players off XFL/USFL rosters during their season?

It's hard enough playing 17 games and playoffs in a season. You want some of them to throw in another 10-12 games, where they could get hurt? Hell, Mason's made $12-15 million being a third stringer and getting slammed with a helmet. He doesn't "need" to work.

There is a valid point on both sides. I just googled and the future reserve does not pay players, it basically just gets them an invite to camp. IDK if it also gives access to the training facility and things associated with that. The reasons not to play in the XFL/USFL is the pay is not very much and the risk of injury keeps you away from the NFL. If you have that future reserve you at least have an invite. Also from hearing others talk your body needs time to recover from an NFL season, even PS players get beat up pretty badly. One guy said if you are a RB on the PS, you may line up on the Dline helping your team prepare that week. So if you come out of that, then go right into XFL, then into NFL camp your body is already behind others trying to make the cut.

If you don't have that futures reserve, then yea you do whatever to get attention and get that next chance.

I respect that some guys want to compete and think they are a starting QB, but how many years was Charlie Batch here, sometimes moved to 3rd string, just keep your mouth shut and collect that bread, lol.

Rudolph has made $8.9 million, but your point remains the same.

Maybe. We signed Tommy Maddox after a stint in the XFL so I’m sure NFL teams, including the Steelers, are watching with interest.

I remember when the AAF league folded and the Steelers immediately signed 5 of their players that offseason in 2019.

Ben Nucci or AJ MaCarron could be interesting to bring in for the #3 QB role, there has to be another arm coming to camp to compete with the Non-Drafted QB out of Minnesota.

I am sure they keep an eye out for players there.
I remember Harrison going to NFL Europe. He came back a different player.

Didn’t we have a former 1st round QB from Denver a few years ago? I’ll take any vet scrub at this point.

I don't see wwntz as a teacher type. Ryan I do. But I don't see him wanting to be on a team with 2 QB ahead of him.

Speaking of XFL players, Hakeem Butler, a 2019 4th rd pick from Iowa State, was invited to rookie mini camp a few hours ago. His size and potential have always been intriguing at 6-5, 221, he ran a 4.4 when he was drafted. Sounds like he has had a great season in the XFL.

XFL/USFL salary is 5k per week.

NFL minimum salary is $750k. The contract prohibits playing elsewhere. The off-season salary is paid in two installments, one at the beginning of the off-season and one at the beginning of the regular season.

Players would lose alot of money to play in these leagues rather than signing NFL contract.

Lets back the train up here. That $750,000 salary is only if you make the 53 man roster for 17 games. You have 90 players competing for 53 spots. those are not good odds. And for those lucky few who can get on a practice squad that is 8K per game week. For those that don't make the practice squad or the actual 53-man roster they are making bubkes. If you don't make the NFL roster that big huge NFL contract is just Pie In The Sky money.

I would say those XFL players pulling down $5,000 per week are making more this year in April, than those players that Steelers just signed to future reserve contracts to in February.

I have no idea how much a player who signs a future reserve contract for $750,000 goes to camp competes in camp and does not make the 53-man roster or catch on with a practice squad actually end up making that year. I would guess it is not even 10K for a year's worth of work.

    Found it....
According to Sports Illustrated, the projected total amount that players earn during the off-season would be right around $7,500.

How does that $5,000 per week XFL/USFL salary look now?

Check this out. Here are your 12 players that signed last year in February for those $750,000 future reserve contracts. How many of these guys do you think made that $750,000.

I will be truthful; I don't recognize any of these names. Did any of these guys get to cash a single game day paycheck in 2022 for their payday of $44,000?

PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Steelers have signed 12 players to Reserve/Futures contracts, holding them on the roster heading into the 2022 season.

Defensive end Daniel Archibong, wide receiver Rico Bussey, defensive tackle Khalil Davis, guard Nathan Gilliam, guard Malcolm Pridgeon, linebacker Delontae Scott, kicker Sam Sloman, defensive back Linden Stephens, tight end Jace Sternberger, safety Donovan Stiner, long snapper Rex Sunahara and wide receiver Tyler Vaughns were all signed by the Steelers.

LOL... If you online search for these guys it looks like most of them missed the entire 2022 NFL season, but some were drafted into the XFL in 2023. Most of these players played the previous year in 2021, but I don't think any of them played for the Steelers in 2022.

Don't be surprised if "Sing along with Mitch" ( for the older posters here) is extended to bring the cap hit down.
