Some of the takes in this thread seem to be missing the context of what we’re giving up and what we’re getting. He’s a guy who was once elite and has faded a bit with age and injuries, and if it’s more the injuries than the age he could be better than expected here. But, the expectation is that he’s a 3rd or 4th receiver (depending on Austin’s development) and a veteran presence. We’re giving up 17 spots in Round 7, and $5 million. That’s not high comp for a veteran 3rd receiver.

I think this was a really good move.

i agree. i think this was a really good pickup. he has a lot of DJ qualities. that's not a bad thing. seems like he has a good head on him as well. this will only make the rest better. who has to cover who is big. it takes some coverage off the others or we have the ability to beat the 3rd or 4th cover guy. if they double someone we have the advantage. it will be up to KFP to find that.

The trade value is almost a wash.
So it is a good trade.
You get a 6'2" ~210lb WR Vet that's probably going to be an asset in the Redzone.
Not to mention the rave reviews this trade gets league wide.
By all accounts, he's healthy and past experiences reveal he's a good asset as a team player.
In role regulated to the 3rd guy, he should stay fresh and healthy (less banging)
He still has a great catch radius and has some speed.
There's just not much downside to this.

And the Rams take a Cap hit.

    Also, not an entire season.

    Also within Canada’s horrible “system”.

Also - it’s easy to point 2 of those pics directly at the WR’s and maybe more.

But watching football strictly by numbers and not actual game play has never been my thing. Strat-O-Magic football.

Missing here and many comments on the 97.3 board (IDK the name as it just shows up on my FB). You would think by some of the comments we traded TJ and our number 1 pick, lol. A couple stated this means they do not think highly of Austin, no, it means they have not seen anything (yet) and our WR room needs veteran depth. No it does not mean we should have signed Odelle or got JuJu back, it is a very low risk move on a guy when healthy takes care of the ball, and brings needed veteran depth. The 2024 cap number is non-existent at this point, is he plays well and wants to stay here there are ways he can still get that cash and they can re-do something to add void years, he may prove its worth it, if not you make the cut.

What it does show me is many of the positions of immediate need have been addressed, this opens the draft to try and build in a variety of positions with BPA at that position on their board. I know the thought is CB or T in the first, and it may well be, but honestly nothing would surprise me.

How doesn’t he fit their scheme?

    Hargrave was considered undersized, too.

As far as not meeting with him, he plays next door, I’m sure they know all they need.

Who is going to return kicks and punts this season ?
Last good one was AB. A good one can single handedly win you a game or 2. Or lose you one like Gunner did.

We need to cut Gunner and Sims is gone.

Hargrave wasn't a great fit, either, which I think was part of why they didn't try harder to keep him. (I know the other part was the investments they already made in Heyward and Tuitt.)

Kancey certainly isn't a physical presence like Heyward or even Ogunjobi. I think he would be best as a tackle in a 4-3, but he could probably adapt to end in the 3-4 and shift inside on passing downs.

I liked this comment in the thread because I think this is where he will fit in for Pickett

    Wrathchild

Hell yeah, with Pickens, Austin and Muth he doesn't need to be the downfield guy either, can be that savvy vet that can get open underneath and be there when kenny needs a bail out option. I love it. Especially for how little we gave up for him.

I think Hargrave was purely a cost decision, especially that year. They were moving him around and was filling in for Tuitt so don’t really think it was a fit issue.

As I have said the undersized thing doesn’t discourage me because I love the leverage it gives them. Kancey has played 5, 3 and 1 technique, the kind of versatility Tomlin loves. In todays league, scheme fit is less important. Just wind Kancey up and let him be a pass rush specialist his first year while he develops the rest of his game.

I can see the argument for not taking him at 17, 1st rd pick you want more of an immediate impact and ideally I wouldnt want to take him there, I would love to get him at 32 but I think he is such a special talent that I wouldn’t mind him at 17.

I still prefer Broderick or Porter at 17.

Excellent, what’s not to like. Basically a free shot at a former Pro Bowl receiver. If it doesn’t work they can
Clear the books and lose practically nothing. Sheesh.

People truly UNDERSELL the value of Veteran Leadership + Experience in certain position groups; Wide Receiver being one of them. Sure, A Rob is not what he once was. However, having such a presence and poise in the group yields far more dividends than others believe.

The biggest surprise for me has been those of us that have been following the Steelers shouldn't be surprised at all. Pittsburgh has always had a pre requisite for both young up and coming talent to be matched up with grizzled Vets and their leadership capabilities. The NFL is the ultimate team sport as it does not just take the best talent but the also the most experienced and adaptable individuals to work together for the goal of hosting the Lombardi trophy. Sure, talents like Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce do assist but other players like Trent McDuffie to Chris Jones all are integral parts to the system.

For me?! I love this move.

I personally love this move and it is arguably my favorite move of the Steelers Offseason thus far; just behind beefing up the trenches. Pittsburgh's lack of Veteran Experience and Leadership within the WR Group showed more often than not during the 2022 season; doubly so for the likes of Diontae as his 2022 Campaign was one to forget. Having someone like Allen Robinson will not only bring that group closer together but allow them to be more focused and cohesive. Yes, having that big slot option is now officially here but the hidden benefits of a player like Robinson will yield its rewards later on down the road.

The biggest winner in all of this?!?! People like @mac daddyo@mac daddyo. Why?! Allen Robinson effectively negates the idea of drafting a WR early barring extreme circumstances. Furthermore, this allows the team to focus on another position. Should he be still available at pick 32, I would not mind the likes of Darnell Washington in the slightest.

Not only can the team run more 12 personnel looks but also the team now has a more efficient fail safe should Pat Freiermuth miss time again.

I don't think they need him to be great, maybe catch 40 passes and split time with Austin in the slot.

There has been plenty of rookie QBs who threw more ints than TDs, Peyton Manning threw like 26 ints his rookie year IIRC .

They had to do something they didn't want Austin to be their only option in the slot.

Some fans act like just because a guy played at Pitt the Steelers should be interested in him , Kancey told some in the Pittsburgh media the Steelers haven't shown any interest in him.
