He wasn't bent over at the waist whatsoever. McCoy was standing straight up and was looking down field at the receiver he just tossed the ball to.

THAT is also what I love about being a Steelers fan!!! I LOVE that hit! My fave is the one on Massahoweveryouspellit when he just DRILLS him and gets up and sorta shrugs his shoulders. That visor gives him an almost Vader like aura. Expressionless. Just ready to do evil! Also when he JACKHAMMERED Vince Young to the turf in 08 I think. THAT'S the d I miss BADDDDD!!!

I always look at these things as a measure of talent. I think most people place these "what ifs" on a level playing field. In other words, if 70's players were playing today, they would have the same access to health and fitness as todays players and their physical size would be that of todays athletes. Same thing with the rules? How do you factor that in? You don't, so you just place it on an even playing field and when you do that, the 70's Steelers teams would beat anyone. But if you're talking about some weird Twilight Zone episode where the 70's team uses the flux capacitor and just warps into todays world, well yeah, then Bobby Biz is probably right.

I think most of the league has "lowered" their targert zone.....anyone else notice more "rib" injuries this year than normal.

Dwins actually said there were record rib injuries this year. I meant to ask him where he read that but it makes sense really.

I don't think it's been hijacked, it's right on topic I'd say. Every single thread on this site is about 2 topics, the one mentioned in the title and then Goodell.

I've been a steeler fan since the glory years of the 70's but late seventies. I first was introduced to the Steelers from the electric football game with the vibrating players. They came with the super bowl participants and I chose the steelers and my brother chose the cowboys and we have been fans ever since. That was over 30 years ago. My children are steeler fans since they were born and now I'm introducing my grandson in to the way of Steeler Nation. I'll be there with them through the good, the bad and the the ugly always sporting my steeler gear.

I agree with this, though it has all been said before.

    Unfortunately, the League's not listening.

I agree with you about Steeler's football. A lot of the swagger was taken away by Goodell when he came down on Harrision. No player can afford fines like he received. It changed his game.

The problem with the penalty and fine for that play is that an offensive player that is running with the football is not protected by the same rules as "defenseless receivers" or passing quarterbacks.

Harrison approached and hit McCoy as he would a "runner," because McCoy looked as if he was going to run. After Harrison had committed to hitting him, McCoy decided to throw the ball. Had he not thrown the ball, I'm not sure a flag would have been thrown or a fine levied (perhaps so, simply because McCoy was still behind the line of scrimmage).

Again, against a running back or a receiver who had established himself after catching a pass that hit would not have been illegal. And in a case like this one when it's difficult to tell the quarterback's intentions, I can't blame Harrison too much.

But that's the thing, the rules in this case actually make it easy to determine. There is no judging intentions. Either a QB is past the line of scrimmage or he isn't. If he isn't, he can't be hit in the head. If he is, then he's a runner. It wouldn't matter if McCoy yelled into a megaphone before the play that he was planning on running the ball, until he actually crosses the line, he can't be hit in the head.

Interesting...I had a similar experience. I inherited one of those vibrating football games from my much older cousin, and he used to live in Mt. Lebanon and grew up a Steelers fan. That sort of started it with me, and the fact that I loved the logo, which I noticed for the first time on a 1974 SI cover.
