Oof.. a lot of votes for Mazi Smith already. I managed to watch some games lately, and I’m torn. I see big potential, but inconsistency.

My vote goes to Trenton Simpson. I see some Shazier-like traits in him. He’s behind where Shazier was coming out of school, but he has that extra gear and downhill aggression that we need at the ILB spot.

    Vote Tally:

    Mazi Smith: 5
    Trenton Simpson: 6
    Dawand Jones: 1

Wow, some surprises here. No votes for Campbell? And only 1 vote for Jones, I would have preferred Jones here but since he won’t get the votes I am going to go with Simpson.

TDFW, I came up with one more vote for Smith. My vote for Simpson brings his tally to 6.

Double check that for me, please.

I still get 5 to 4. Animus nominated and didn't technically vote. But it's safe to say that's his pick.

Did you vote Simpson? I think it's your vote I might have missed.

I agree. I am shocked Campbell didn't get any votes. He seems to get mocked to the Steelers pretty often.

Ah yeah, he said nominate not vote.

Yes, I just voted for Simpson in my previous post.

@S.T.D who do you like more out of these guys, cast a vote. You can keep your guy secret so no one steals him from you before your pick :lolol:

Campbell gets mocked to the Steelers because Simpson isn't available. The Steelers signed two Buck LBs during free agency. Simpson is a Mack, a lot closer to Shazier. 4.42 40, has played safety. We don't need a LB to stuff the run. We need a lb who can cover a te or rb out of the backfield.

Yea, for me it doesn't make sense to nominate and vote. It's a one or the other type thing.

The difference is you can nominate someone and then vote for someone else. It happens all the time.

If you're nominating and voting in one post please clarify that. That makes it easier to count and keep track of votes.

    Trenton Simpson has the votes.

That was a close race between two good prospects.

Not drafting Campbell because you have Holcomb would be like not drafting a slot receiver because you have Switzer.

Campbell is a big boy with great athletic traits, he doesn’t have the long speed but I think he tested better than any other LB at the combine.

Holcomb was also brought in for his coverage abilities, he ran a 4.48 and has filled every roll as a LB. Steelers are going for versatile players as well as big bodies, I think they want to take advantage of teams going with smaller quicker players, they want to be able to bully teams.

I’m tired of seeing lineman get their hands on players like Bush and wash them out of the play.

I'm kind of wondering in real life if the Steelers do go Mazi Smith at 32. The only other d-lineman with that size is Ika, and I think he's a third rounder- a two down nose tackle. At 49, we may have the choice between Campbell and Drew Sanders.

And as far as testing better at the combine, it really doesn't mean what it used to. There were 22 linebackers at the combine. Only 16 did the 40 yd dash. 15 each in the long and verticle jumps. 5 in the three cone drill and 6 in the shuttle. Only 10 did the bench press.

So, yes, he got the best scores in the cone and shuttle drills, but only 1 in 4 were doing them. He finished next to last in the 40 and third from last in 10 yard split. And he didn't bench.

Agreed, easily see the Steelers taking Mazi Smith at #32 this year. Ika is not even close to being in his same class.

Shush. That's the reason I didn't put Him out there. No need to alert people if He won't get the votes.

The results in the tests he did perform were elite.

    6.74 three cone
    4.24 shuttle
    1.59 10 yard split
    10’ 8” broad jump
    37.5 inch vertical

All that at 250lbs. The guy IMO is hands down the best ILB in this draft

He can also cover, 236 yards on 418 coverage snaps. You’re obviously not going to ask him to run down the seam to cover anyone but zone he is very good at. He can cover shallow.

At 32, I like Simpson. He's faster, stronger, and can do more in pass coverage, including playing 3rd safety.
At 49, I like Campbell. But the 10 yard split time is hardly elite. It was the third slowest of 16 linebackers.

All that means is they also tested very good. 1.70 is what you are looking for from that test. At 250lbs he did that in 1.59.

Whatever concerns there were about Campbells athletic abilities he obliterated them.

I haven’t seen one big board that doesn’t have him ranked the best ILB. I doubt he lasts to 49.

I was probably going to take him for Detroit. Lot of potential with him.

On a side note to all, please use this thread for discussions and the announcement thread strictly for announcements so I don’t have to sift through them to find announced picks. Getting messy over there, makes it tougher to keep track of who has been selected.

Throwing a name out to consider, Tyler Steen, tackle out of Alabama.

Alabama seem to put out good lineman.

Don’t really know of any others. Was going to vote Dawand Jones but drunk GM just took him.
