Horrible idea. Having to win 3-4 playoff games it a very hard thing to do with the level of competition and the fact that games are only a week away (other than the Superbowl).

If you throw in that many teams, it would often come down to which team can stay the healthiest playing a big slate of games back to back to back.

Just another dumb idea by Gooddell. There will be about 4 sub .500 teams in the playoffs every year which only rewards mediocrity.

current 6 team playoffs(per Conf) is 3 rounds, then the superbowl. 8 team playoff would also be 3 rounds. the only difference is the top 2 seeds would lose the byes.

Haha, Let's make them play on Sunday then to finish it off with a Thursday game. Don't forget about possible Tuesday games now. Sheesh!!

    A couple points:

    1. I don't want football to extend any later than it already does. Don't mess with a good thing.

    2. Eliminating division winners is a bad idea, that would render all rivalries that make this game great as officially done with.

    3. Goodell does work for the owners. It only makes me wonder, which greedy owners are in his ear for more money in an already successful league. Possibly Jerry Jones who lavishly overpaid for a new stadium?? I doubt Rooney's are pining for more games....

    4. More playoff teams is going to let some bad, undeserving teams into the playoffs. Teams with losing records.

It's a majority vote, right? Not a unanimous vote, so it's not like he is speaking for all the owners.

I agree, but regarding the last point...I think that you could greatly reduce the chances of a playoff team with a losing record by doing away with the conferences. 2003 was the last time an NFL team with a losing record was ranked 16th in the league according to record.

I say still keep 8 divisions and the 8 winners automatically make it in and get seeds 1-8. The next 8 best records are seeds 9-16. 1 plays 16, 2 plays 15, and so on. Reseed after each round. Last 2 teams play for the Super Bowl. Just imagine the possibility of a Steelers/Patriots SB. Or a Steelers/Ravens. Or an Eagles/Cowboys. Or a any number of inter conference rivals that wouldn't get a chance to play each other for the Championship.

Under this scenario, I think I could support a 16 team play off schedule.

    TOP 12 Trophy order

#1 = WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS (STEELERS)
    #2 = WE WERE ROBBED
#3 = WE COULD HAVE BEATEN EITHER OF THEM
#4 = IT WAS THE OFFENSES FAULT
#5 = IT WAS THE DEFENSES FAULT
#6 = OUR FAN BASE IS PISSED BUT WE SHILL GOT A SHINY OBJECT
#7 = GET BACK WITH US LATER, WE'RE BUSY GOLFING
#8 = CAN WE CASH THESE CHECKS YET?
#9 = OUR HAIRBALL IS BETTER THAN YOUR HAIRBALL
#10 = BULL - OURS THROWS A BIGGER TEMPER TANTRUM
#11 = US BENGAL PLAYERS DESERVE THIS TROPHY - IT'S BEEN 40 YEARS IN THE MAKING
#12 = WHAT HAPPENED TO THE TUCK RULE? HE HIT ME! HE HIT ME! WHY ARE THEY LOOKING AT THESE TAPES? BOB CALL ROGER IMMEDIATELY

I'm not sold on it either way. Adding one or two more teams to the playoffs for each conference would make things more exciting with the growing parity in the league.
If we add 2 teams, the bye week for the top two seeds should be gone. Let the top seed be the home team and leave the advantage at that.

Let's kill the whole false idea of having "more possible" 8-8 and below teams added to the playoffs. Those 8-8 teams that make the playoffs are the rare super-weak division champs (chumps).
During those years, there always seems to be one unlucky 10-6 team in the league and a couple 9-7 teams in both conferences that miss the playoffs. Those are the teams that would be added.
Most years we all say that we need to get to 10-6 to even think of making the playoffs. It's those teams that barely miss the playoffs (and are "better" than the lowliest division champ) that would get in.

Now I'm not saying we definitely should do this, but either way, I would like to see the "seeding" be totally based on record. How many times are the Steelers and Ravens going to both have a 12-4 record and one team get stuck with the #5 seed? Almost every year the second or third best team in a conference is sitting behind a conference champ at 12-4 and goes on the road to play some 9-7 team. Switch that stuff up!

Somebody had the idea to just take the top 16 teams from the whole NFL (regardless of conference) and put them in the playoffs. I think they actually said the Division Champs plus next best 8 teams if I remember correctly. This idea totally intrigues me! It screws up the whole AFC versus NFC vibe, but puts the best teams in the tournament to get after it! I'd like to see if somebody has any ideas on how we could get the best of both worlds!

    Just my 2 cents!

I am so sick of the idea in America that EVERYONE should make the team and EVERYONE should get a trophy and EVERYONE should get to play! The system is fine as it is now! There is NO reason to mess with this. I can't stand Goodell. It get more ridiculous EVERY TIME HE OPENS HIS MOUTH! How is it that the players hate him? Every knowledgable fan hates him? And yet the owners want this clown to be the face of the league?! Adding games is bad for the brand. Football is basically show business these days and the lifelong motto of show business is "leave 'em wanting more" right? The reason baseball and the NBA is so hard to really invest in is because they play so many games. In the NFL you play very few games so it creates a greater tension and drama. With these rules the lazy players of this era would have even LESS of a reason to really give it everything they've got with urgency because you would stand a greater chance of getting in DESPITE being a loser! I'm sick of this mentality. If you wanna go to the playoffs the solution is simple. Draft better. Coach better. Prepare better. Train better. PLAY better. Dang we need to quit trying to make everyone feel special! Ok now I'm gonna go put my soapbox up. Although I'm only 5'4 and really sorta need it for a lot of other reasons.
