What goes on at practice, anyhow?

Given that I believe that for sport in general, how you play reflects how you practice, does anyone know what actually goes on in practice during the week? I believe that Tuesday is film study, and then W, Th, & Fr are practices, but what do they do? Does anyone address the emotional readiness for Sunday? Given the variation in intensity and apparent game readiness that seems to be seen on Sunday, isn't there some inkling of this during the week? I know they would never tell anyone, but you gotta wonder if some of the symptoms are present during the week, and either (a) they aren't noticed or (2) no one knows how to correct them.

Let's hope they are ready, physically, tactically, emotionally, and psychologically for Dallas.

I've recently wondered this myself. I think Goddell has changed the face of practice as we know it. Everytime I see our guys at the practice field on ESPN or whatever other station during the week it seems like a backyard game of catch we would have with our family at get togethers. I know this much after some of our bad games in the past Cowher would have em in pads all week until the next game and I'm sure if Tomlin could he would do the same. It's sad but the days of practicing and playing physical for us has taken a hit thanks to Goddell. Hopefully though down the stretch this team will get the eye of the tiger. Alot of opportunities are still on the table to be had! Go Steelers and stomp them Cowboys Sunday!

Yeah, Noll and Cowher would have them in "three-a-days" with pads, after a game like SD, but sadly, not any more. The new rules help teams like NE, but not us......and probably not the Ratbirds.

There's got to be a drop-off fundamentally if you're not practicing in pads and just doing shorts walk-through.

I just think they aren't starting the game ready for contact like they used to do.

So all teams should be impacted equally but it doesn't seem like they are.

Thats the point I was trying to make above...why do we seem to be the ONLY team affected by the rule changes at practice? (if that's even the issue which Im not sure it is).

I don't think the rule has anything to do with it.

But don't you see how much of a cop out that is? Saying the rule is to blame but every other coach in the league has learned to adapt to the rule change including other physical teams such as SF. Great, or even good coaches adapt to changes in the game.

i think last week was more about wanting to see if ben could play all week and kuglar and his new head coaching gig. focus on the rest of the team and the SD chargers was lost.

I'm no fan of Godells but he has nothing to do with the changes in practice, that was negotiated into the new CBA by the players, they wanted that. The players are soft and it shows.

I've always wondered what went on at practice too. Didn't they also change the rules about how often they can wear pads in camp too?

I definitely do which is why I said I wasnt sure it was even the issue. I was just trying to point out that IF that was an issue it would effect eveyone not just our team.

Yeah, they can only practice in pads like 1 day a week now, some ridiculous thing like that. Lambert would laugh at todays players and tell them to all wear skirts.

Judging by what we saw last week these boys are smoking some stuff that mellows them out so much they lack the aggression.. What happened to our team..?

I truly believe that Tomlin has too much faith in our guys to do what's needed. He needs to realize he's dealing with lazy, spoiled and selfish athletes who aren't always going to do what's needed on their own

Yea, I wonder about that, too. The standard is the standard needs to apply all week, not just on Sunday, and I wonder what the standard is at practice?

i doubt he has the power and the leadership to change that , tomlin is perfect when everything is working , good speaker ,good image , friendly approach... , when there are issues he doesn't have the hammer

You know you might be right shaner. Could very well be an over confidence in the teams abilities. Maybe they are mortal afterall. Game preparation has certainly changed and has had a negative impact on this team

It's a great quetion. It seems to me that they must take turns week to week ,because the O and D never seem to show up to the same game together.
