Been lots of BACKUP QB talk around here for the last month...I have asked time and time again...and all I get is the Steelers should have a Kaepernick in the fold.....When Kaepernick was drafted to be a starter....#36 overall...Alex Smith just happened to beat him out two years in a row.

    So here goes.

    RULES:
Must pick 1 vet and 1 young QB to bring along

They can not currently be a starter in the league

Your vet has to be towards the backup phase of his career

Your young QB to groom has to have less than 4 years in the league and not been drafted in the top two rounds unless it appears he is already in "FLOP" mode and you are choosing to give him a second chance. (example...Yes: Tebow to Sanchez No: Rogers to Favre)

Lets hear who these great untapped talents are that everyone thinks the Steelers should have drafted.

    1. Colt McCoy
    2. Carson Palmer

I know Palmer might sound a little crazy but I just wouldn't be surprised if the Raiders don't try and move on without him and just totally rebuild. THEY suck horribly. HE still plays pretty good. But since this is totally hypothetical I think it's ok for me to say him. If I didn't say Carson Palmer I would say Alex Smith. I know Smith is still sorta in starter territory but it just constantly seems like noone wants him and it just seems inevitable that he's gonna wind up being a backup.

My bad HACK I missed the part about they can't be starters. In this case there is no doubt in my mind that Matt Hasselbeck is the best backup in the league. That's who I would take for sure.

Byron L, Charlie B...Face it, if Brady or the Mannings, or Brees go down, those teams are fkd too. I'll stick with my boys another year. If we played a little cleaner, we could have gone 3 - 0 (don't wanna hear coulda, woulda, shoulda, you get my point)

i know i would have kept one on the PS with the background of ours.

    i always liked billy volek.

also as you know i'd like colin klien in the draft. i believe our 3rd guy should have the ability to make some plays with his feet if need be. just to give an extra demension.

Hasslebeck or Orton for the vet.

McCoy for the young'n (new chance)

I still like Batch a bit more than Lefty - I think if Batch was #2 the entire year he has a much better first outing. I also think we beat the Ravens at home with a prepared Batch.

Remember when Brady missed the entire season in 2008? His backup ( Matt Cassel) threw for 3700 yards and the Pats went 11-5. just sayin....

I like Kyle Orton too. I think he's kinda like Alex Smith. He's shown that he can get it done but since there's no real flash to his game teams just keep letting him go.

I gotta go with Colt also. He got a raw deal on Cleveland. Keep leftwich one more year and let he and Colt duke it out for 2 and 3.

    Youth- Joe Webb
I'm not a big fan of scambling QBs as a starter, but love it with my backup who no matter what will have limited reps. Your arm will get rusty, but your legs are a weapon any time. Webb saw some time with the Vikings before Ponder came in, and won some games. He's not a guy I ever expect to be ready for a full time starter role... but that's not what we want. Some people want to draft a guy to sit and eventually take over for Ben... I say you wait till Ben is done and take a 1st rounder then.

    Vet- Kyle Orton

This guy played very well in Denver for a while. I think with our new offense, short pass accuracy is more important than a cannon. Orton could stand in just fine, and he's obviously past the starting part of his career.

Honorable mentions: Mike Vick, Bruce Gradkowski, Matt Moore, Seneca Wallace

Youth: I'd like to see what Hoyer could do, but I like Colt.

Vet: Kyle Orton or Matt Hasselbeck. I prefer Orton, he's 5 years younger.

Very nice guys...saw some names I did not think of.

But I would like to point out that there is roughly 96 QB's in the league at any given time.....of those 96 we normally keep 3

The names listed were pretty much the same 3 or 4 names..Hasselbeck, Orton, McCoy....there are 31 other teams fighting for their services as well....and Hasselbeck was signed to start before a rookie took his job

All guys mentioned have about a 55 to 60 career percentage completion. Hoyer is at 63...but has thrown less than 50 passes.

    Charlie Batch - Steel Valley

    Luke Getsy - Steel Valley

Ya just know that Luke would stay/play for the minimum forever, just like Homestead Charlie!
Plus, us Ironmen rarely have anything to cheer about.

David Garrard does not seem to get a lot of support. Curious why more people don't consider him given his past success and good experience as a starter.

I would probably go with Garrard and McCoy.
I have one issue with Garrard, and that's the flashback that I always have of the massive blatant hold on Casey Hampton while Garrard ran for a first time to kill us off in the play off game against the Jags in Tomlin's first year. We didn't do enough to win that game, but to lose on such a bad mis-call still makes me a little sick.
Obviously nothing to do with Garrard's talent at all. Hence why I would take him as a back up.

because he is another injury plagued guy ( Like Leftwich ) and on the wrong side of 30 ...2 wrongs don't make a right ..

Sure I have Stanton down who is at or close to 30 ( did not look his age up nor do I intend to ) but no significant injury concerns

I'll go with Orton for the Vet and Hoyer/McCoy for the youngster.
I'd really like to see what Hoyer has. He may have the most upside of them all.
McCoy has played tough and looked pretty good against us...that's why many Steelers fans like him.
Hoyer is probably the only realistic one of the bunch. Somebody will pay starter money for Orton and McCoy may land a "chance" at a starting job.
There is no way any of them start in Pittsburgh other than Ben getting hurt. We could probably resign Hoyer to a cheap contract.
I bet they keep Lefty around and let Charlie go...not that I want Lefty around, mind you. I could just see that happening.
