So I was playing around with the playoff generator at ESPN trying out different scenarios. I was able to get the Steelers to as high as #2 seed but could not get them to #1. LOL. Even getting the Chiefs and Fins at 10-7 resulted in them always winning the tie-breaker over the Steelers. Does anyone know if there's still a scenario where the Steelers could get the top seed?

I don't expect them to even make the playoffs but it's fun to dream about a best case scenario.

I got them as the #1 seed on the 538.com playoff predictor. Basically, I had to get the Steelers at 10-7, and everyone els no better than 9-8. The whole AFC East, Balt, Cincy and KC. I actually think they win a 10-7 tie breaker with KC on Conf record. But would lose to any AFC East on head to head. With 5 weeks left there are probably close to a trillion possible scenarios. So lots of things are possible. But the chances of some of them are lower than the chances of a winning Powerball ticket blowing into your open car window.

They should probably just win the next game and see where it goes from there.

That's the most boring way of approaching a playoff generator. :)

The purpose of a playoff generator is to set the Steelers to win out and then go from there with manipulating the other games.

For some here I think they would prefer a draft generator to see the best draft pick they could get.

with just 5 games to play, you can get the Steelers anywhere from having the #1 seed to having the #1 pick. With a trillion possible scenarios, virtually anything is possible, even if the extreme scenarios are astonishingly unlikely. In the next week or 2 as teams clinch and get eliminated the picture gets more settled.

I went through the rest of the NFL schedule on the simulator and picked the games that I thought each team would win with the exception of the Steelers who I had winning out. Here is the playoff breakdown that I came up with.
    #1 Bills.
    #7 Steelers at #2 Chiefs.
    #6 Dolphins at #3 Bengals.
    #5 Chargers at #4 Titans.
Ravens are also 10-7 but lose tie breaker to us because of our projected sweep.
Just for fun here is the NFC:
    #1 Eagles.
    #7 Giants @ #2 Vikings.
    #6 Seahawks @ #3 49ers
    #5 Cowboys @ #4 Bucs

I’ve been playing with the various playoff simulators as well. What I’m finding is that if we win out, it’s almost a lock that we make the playoffs. If we lose just 1 more game, our chances fall off a cliff.

Also, the division was within reach at 10-7 until the Bengals beat KC. Now we would almost certainly need to make it as a WC.

I found a scenario where we play the Bengals first round...I like those odds better!

If you figured out a way to get 2nd seed then you have some mighty fine weed. In order to figure out a route to the number 1 seed you'll need mushrooms at the very least.

I still can’t think I would spend my time on a playoff generator

I think that speaks to the old Pete Rozelle goal of achieving "parity." Through 13 weeks, you can be a top seed or have the number 1 pick.

Steelers winning and teams like Patriots, Jets, Raiders, Ravens, Browns losing might put us in playoff contention. Either way, it makes each week more exciting

The steelers don't have the tiebreaker over several team this year so it will take 10 wins to make it

Right. Setting aside head to head, if we lose one more game to an AFC opponent and finish 9-8, we’ll have a 5-7 conference record. If we lose only one more game and it’s to Carolina, there’s a slightly better chance of getting in at 9-8 with a 6-6 conference record, though still only slight.

and that ain't happening, as we know. tiebreakers, early season losses doomed us. losing TJ doomed us. Would have won 1 or 2 of those games vs NE / NY that we lost. they both suck.
