The suggested replacement for the kickoff sounds ludicrous.

Not sure where your confusion lies........
"Instead of a kickoff, the team that scored would then take the ball on its own 30-yard line in, essentially, a 4th-and-15 situation. In other words, they could attempt to keep their offense on the field and try to pick up 15 yards, at the risk of turning the ball over on downs; or they could punt".

Here's the meat of the quote from the article regarding kickoffs:

According to TIME, Goodell recently discussed with Rick McKay, Falcons president and head of the NFL’s competition committee, a radical rule change proposed by Tampa Bay coach Greg Schiano. Instead of a kickoff, the team that scored would then take the ball on its own 30-yard line in, essentially, a 4th-and-15 situation. In other words, they could attempt to keep their offense on the field and try to pick up 15 yards, at the risk of turning the ball over on downs; or they could punt.
“I don’t do things for public relations,” Goodell said. “I do things because they’re the right thing to do, because I love the game.”

It doesn't seem to me like Goodell is endorsing the idea. It just says he discussed it with Rick McKay. I don't think such a rule change would make it through the owners.

If he loves the game so much, why is he trying so hard to completely change it. I usually don't try and revamp what I love.

Just more Fantasy type stuff Implications...More ways for the Offenses to keep the ball and score more points and put up more stats....A make it take it rule in Football,,Lord forbid.....I am sure if they got is passed the 4th. and 15 would quickly become a 4th. and 5....

Not so sure a lot of Teams wouldn't want this rule,Any Team with a High Powered O and a weak D would vote for it.....If they passed such a rule I would never watch the NFL while it was in place....

I think any team would take that option. 4th and 15 on your 30??? Only if you're down and desperate to get the ball back. I see Punts in 95% in these situations. So essentially you're trading kickoffs for punts.

Injuries happen to occur during punting situations also. Does that mean they should now eliminate rushing the punter altogether for trying to create a block and mandating a fair catch for the receiving team.?
This may come as a surprise to Roger but Injuries occur in contact sports. Maybe they should just declare the winner after the coin toss.

I find it so wrong the the NFL kickoff was changed in the first place. Million dollar players can't field a normal kickoff, worried for saftey and future well being, all the while colleges and high schools still leave the kickoffs alone. Just not right.

Goodell is a tool. I can see the next few rule proposals now (not saying this was one, but you know him...) - from now on, receivers are to be given a 5-yard cushion to catch the ball and the defenders must only two-hand tag them to tackle. Any other contact results in a suspension and placement of the ball at the opposing team's 5-yard line. QBs are no longer allowed to be touched - ever. And so on...

Man kickoff is so much a part of the game it just wouldn't be the same if they got rid of it.

Why doesn't he go after something that should really be changed like the fact the Washington DC Redskins should change their name being racist?

Yeah, and they should change the name of the Steelers since it is too close to Stealers which is negative.

In 2004, a poll by the Annenberg Public Policy Center at the University of Pennsylvania concluded that 91% of the American Indians surveyed in the 48 states on the mainland USA found the name acceptable.

    It's a non-issue.

I wonder if the skins changed their name to the (WHITE SKINS) would that satisfy the indians? Yep for the indians, but Nope for the whites, the next thing we would hear is some white groups sueing and complaining they are being racialy discriminated against:

    Are people with skin upset?

I'd be pissed off if I was an eagle. Philly gives them a bad name. Come to think of it, there are a lot of zoos that must be upset since there are quite a few bad team named after animals.

I've thought about this often. If there was some the Alabama Blackskins it'd be racist. But Native American Indians have always gotten the crappy end of racism ignored. Like in DC, there is still the road named Indian head Highway, where US soldiers mounted the heads of indians on poles on the sides of the highway during the war.
