A player only had to be paid to be “professional “

Last year Pleasantville had a HS before a merger with Titusville. Upper Allegheny Valley was the very rural sports league fir these schools that likely averaged less than 100 kids in the entire HS. Great memories.

My wife is from the middle of the New Mexico desert and her graduating class had 17

They played 6 man football and most kids played both ways

They parked the cars around the field to provide headlights for lighting

I think it wasDJ Dozier rb from PSU that played HS in WV on an 8 man team. I lived on KS for a couple of years and one on my employees said in the rural western counties it was 6 or 7 fb. He said it looked funny, but actually playing it was a blast. More like back yard pick up games.

Yep..graduated from Tittyviile many years ago..those mentioning Marienville will know Lickingville well (true village). Now in my job every week I drive through the Gap to get to Intercourse, which leads to Paradise...make a wrong turn and you can get lost in Blue Ball.

Of course you can also serviced at BJs Raw...yes that a business (I think Amish owned). Lol

Since this thread went everywhere (me partly responsible) your post reminded me of Jim Thorpe. Won gold in both the Decathlon and Pentatholon (no longer an event) at the 1912 Olympics..then list them because he got paid basically food money playing summer baseball. I think the medals were recently reinstated..but think how far 'amateur' has changed.

Ok, what is the answer? I’m told I was close, but what in the mind of the OP is the correct answer. I’m guessing that there will be debate about it.

We could probably debate a turnip but according to the Pro Football HOF:

    1892
In an era in which football was a major attraction of local athletic clubs, an intense competition between two Pittsburgh-area clubs, the Allegheny Athletic Association (AAA) and the Pittsburgh Athletic Club (PAC), led to the making of the first professional football player. Former Yale All-America guard William (Pudge) Heffelfinger was paid $500 by the AAA to play in a game against the PAC, becoming the first person to be paid to play football, November 12. The AAA won the game 4-0 when Heffelfinger picked up a PAC fumble and ran 35 yards for a touchdown.

In the early days of football a TD was worth only 4 points. Thus the 4-0 score.

Thorpe had died years earlier but in 1982 the Olympic Committee reinstated his 2 gold medals and they were given to his daughter Charlotte at a ceremony.

Pudge Heffelfinger is possibly the best name ever. I’m quite upset I have no more children to name…
