If Kenny keeps his college number which is 8 what are the chances some sports writer makes a story out of the Steelers moving on from 7 to 8. Similar to the way much was made of the Yankees giving Mantle the next number after Ruth and Gehrig and the pressure he felt about having to wear that number.

You know there is a beat writer sitting in Pittsburgh just waiting for the right moment to unleash a story on the end of an era with Ben7 retiring and Kenny8 starting the new era of Steelers football.

Could have avoided the issue (if there really is one, which I doubt) by wearing Haskins’ number for one year, as a tribute. That would have been a nice gesture.

Number matters not but I like the idea of 8. That will be his goal, to get us #7 and #8:)

We’ll, we went from 8 to 7. It’s only natural to go from 7 to 8….

Just posted Joseph gave up his number. He will now be 38. Already speculation in the article if Pickett have incentives lol.

TBH I'm sure he does better in that jersey than Maddox did... so at least he will have that going for him. He wore 2 in HS. So maybe he takes Mason Rudolph's number along with his job, pride, and soul. I personally would love to see #1 as a wild card, but who knows.

Only one member of the Pittsburgh Steelers' rookie class has received their jersey number in the days immediately following the draft. That player is quarterback and first-round pick Kenny Pickett, who will continue to wear No. 8 after wearing that number at the University of Pittsburgh.

Karl Joseph, the Steelers' veteran safety, changed his jersey from No. 30 to No. 8 last season after Melvin Ingram (who wore No. 8 during his brief time in Pittsburgh) was traded to Kansas City during the 2021 campaign. Joseph has switched numbers again following the Steelers' acquisition of Pickett, as he will now wear No. 38 for the upcoming season.

Typically, a rookie has to offer some sort of incentive for a veteran to give up his number. It will be interesting to see if that was the case here or if Joseph simply volunteered to change numbers. Regardless, Pickett will get to keep his number, as his No. 8 jerseys are already being sold on the Steelers' website.

If someone does write something like this, I wouldn't pay much attention to it. I would assume it would just be headline fodder and nothing more.

    • Mickey was originally assigned #6 since he was seen as the next in line for Yankee greatness after Babe Ruth (#3), Lou Gehrig (#4) and Joe DiMaggio (#5). After a slow start however, he was sent down. By the time he returned, Bobby Brown had returned from military service and with that, was given back the #6 he had worn for the previous four years. Mickey was given #7, previously worn that season by Cliff Mapes (traded to the Browns) and Bob Cerv (demoted), and he has owned it ever since.
If you watch the move 61 which I'm sure had a bit of dramatic license Mantle talks about the pressure he felt being given the number 6 because of Ruth, Gerhing,, and DiMaggio. That pressure to be the next great one in line. He says he was relieved when he got sent down and when he called back up he was issued #7. I have no idea why that popped into my head when I saw Pickett's college number but just something to think about.

I thought it would be a pool if we should get his jersey this year. I was wrong. I’ll come back when this turns into another bash Tomlin thread
