Austin and Pickens are a perfect Duo for the WR room.

I'm more excited about this pick than any other. This dude is ridiculous.

With the Steelers ability to develop WR's, I couldn't be happier with the two we got.

This has been mentioned elsewhere, but the comparison doesn't make sense. They play different positions. Archer was a running back, not a receiver.

I thought he was. I think Archer had a couple of serious injuries not unlike Sean Spence.

Tyreek Hill, while listed as 5'10, is actually 5'8 1/8. Tyler Lockett is 5'10, Marquis Brown is 5'9 and so on. The current rules of the NFL essentially all but forbid Defensive Backs laying out WR's like they used to. They are as about as untouchable as the position has ever been.

CA3 will do just fine health permitting.

I remember watching CA3 running the forty on his first try at the combine. He was clocked at 4.03. After reviewing the tape you could see that he had taken almost a full step before the clock started. It is hard making a judgement on his forty time because he is so fast out of the blocks that he is already moving before the clock can determine that he started.

Maybe there were injuries, too, but he just sucked.

After I saw this the first time awhile back, I ran it back like 20 times.

Laws of physics don't seem to apply here.

I know he wasn't here long. They wasted a pick on McFarland as well. They likely could have signed a more productive UDFA.

Let's look at the list of recent 5'-8" wide receivers:

    Marquis Maze 2012
    Tavon Austin 2013
    Dri Archer 2014
    Mario Alford 2015
    Jamison Crowder 2015
    Ryan Switzer 2017
    Victor Bolden 2017
    Kermit Whitefield 2017
    Trent Taylor 2017
    Quadree Henderson 2018
    Jaelon Darden 2021

Not a good list. And not the types of receivers anyone should be targeting in the draft. Maybe in UDFA, maybe.
That said. Calvin Austin most closely compares to Tavon Austin, and not just because of the last name, but more importantly athletically and production wise. They are basically identical.
There is some value to that pick.
However, when I graded the Steelers draft, I gave them 0 points for that pick. It's basically of no value to me.

I would take your post more seriously if you didn't include a running back, Archer, in a list of wide receivers. A Steelers fan should know that.

Just because they are similar physically doesn't mean he is going to be the same player as Tavon Austin. There is more to that position than height and speed.

Jamison Crowder is actually a good player. I think Calvin Austin is faster, but I'd take Crowder-like production from him. He is all of one inch shorter than Wes Welker and Steve Smith. I guess that inch just ruins the guy.

I am concerned that he seems to be a little too skinny, but that is something that he can work on.

I said production wise! They are similar players production wise!! Not just physically, and not just because their last name is Austin, but as players production wise.

    TAVON AUSTIN 5'-8.5" 175 lbs 4.34 40
    2011: 13 games, 101 catches, 1186 yards, 8 TD
    2012: 13 games, 114 catches, 1289 yards, 12 TD

    CALVIN AUSTIN 5'-8" 170 lbs 4.32 40
    2020: 11 games, 63 catches, 1053 yards, 11 TD
    2021: 12 games, 74 catches, 1149 yards. 8 TD

So 10 years apart in different programs with different offenses and different levels of competition, you think that is somehow evidence that they will be the same players as pros. You're funny.

Of course not. I should rather like you think that he is an outlier greatest of all time.

By all means, show us all the post in which I wrote anything of the kind. I'll save you some time. It doesn't exist. There is a great deal of ground between being completely useless, where you put him, and the greatest of all time. I figure he belongs somewhere in that middle. I think he's got a chance to help the team on kick returns immediately. Maybe he can get regular playing time as a third or fourth receiver this season and make the occasional big play, with the hope that he emerges as a full-time slot guy at some point in the future. If his upside is Antwaan Randle El without the passing skills, he is worth the pick.

These little dudes washout in the NFL more than not, don’t care what position it is. The players CA3 is being compared to are bigger and thicker, they all have 15-20lbs on him. He’ll have to put some weight on, 170lbs will get swallowed up, does he have the frame to handle 15-20lbs? I don’t know, he looks slight to me.

I hope he is used more than a gadget player for jet sweeps, scheme this guy open in the middle of the field which was a barren wasteland last season, let his speed after the catch chew up chunks of turf.

Have to get his weight up though or he’ll be another failed try at a speedy little guy. Even then odds are against him, not easy playing in this league at that diminutive size.

I agree. I just hope We are wrong. 170 does seem small for the NFL.
Though Deshaun Jackson I believe went 175.

every time I see someone complain about Austin I think of Warrick Dunn. Dunn was 1” taller and weighed 6 more lbs. If we can get a Dunn-esque career out of Austin it will be a steal.

Sauce never gave up a TD in his college career. He almost gave up 2 to Austin in one game. The first one was on a double move where Sauce wisely grabbed Austin before he could separate, and impeded Austin’s progress enough to allow the pass to drop harmlessly beyond Austin. The second was a shallow cross where Austin left Sauce in the dust, and only a lunging shoe string trip up of Austin by another defender prevented the long TD.

I watched a lot of tape on him late yesterday and he looks just as legit as Desean Jackson looked coming out of college. Very intriguing.
