He’s a long shot to ever be a quality NFL starter. I think he’s an A or B Tyrod Taylor.

the rush in his face or the collapse of the pocket without much of a chance to step up into the pocket effects what you are talking about too. the line has not been real good creating a good pocket for some years now. at least not consistently. way too many times that pocket is pushed back into his face. ben's as well.

fix the o-line and we could see more accuracy and more step into throws. many things can help or hurt accuracy and ball placement. i don't believe it's an all or nothing type of conversation. he has things to work on but he also needs the protection to allow those things. it will affect whomever is in the pocket. ben, trubisky, rudolph, willis. pouncey was great as a run blocker. he could hit multiple targets on the move, but he was also pushed back into the qb a lot. so was green. in your face rushers with no step up lanes has hurt for several years. yet the qb gets some unwarranted ire for what isn't his fault always.

we complain about the dink and dunk offense and the short quick throws but they are created. the o-line under MT has almost been a second thought or the money saving part of the offense. udfa usage. not counting two guys that had aged away up front. mid to lower tier players have been used for years to make this offense run but the blame falls on the qb. we have been lacking in fixing this area to let qb's thrive.

Both QB's have an opportunity to be serviceable starters. I think Mason has the most potential. Mitch has had 50 starts in the NFL and was able to prepare as a starting QB.

The "it" factor is what is missing from these guys. You see that fire in any good QB no matter how bad the team is. You do not see the fire in either Qb. Mason has shown some flashes in very limited play. His inconsistency is what has plagued him. He forces bad throws and way too often lets balls sail. He's prone to INT's largely because he really struggles throwing accurate balls on out routes and seems to have poor pocket presence. He'll be killed behind this line. I do wonder if Tomlin is going to allow any of these QB's to shine. I fully expect they will be running the most conservative offense we have ever seen and it's going to be brutally ugly to watch.

Of the 2 Qb's I think Mason is the most interesting. Mitch is a game manager at best. He's had LOTS of opportunities to shine and he's failed miserably. A capable QB shows he's capable at some point after making 50 starts in the NFL. Mason has had a handful of games as a back up. Mitch was groomed to be the starter and had multiple off seasons to grow. Blame the bears offense if you want... the steelers offense was just as poorly coached and ran the worst system in the league. So I do not buy the excuse that Mitch was hampered by playing in Chicago. Mason has the same excuses. Now both are in the same horrible system being coached by inferior coaches w/ no talent at the WR position. So both will likely fail. It's gonna be hand the ball off, dink and dunk quick passes , same crap we have seen for 2 years now. The team will struggle to score and we will be lucky to win 7 games because of turnovers and bad coaching. Ben at least did a decent job of protecting the ball. These two will turn the ball over. IMO the ONLY chance we have at being competitive is with Mason. He might have upside. Mitch does not.

Imagine if Mason was given the same time to prepare as a starting Qb as Mitch had. Obviously I'm making assumptions but I think it's safe to say Mason would have better results if he was allowed to start 50 games like Mitch. Mason has had maybe 10 starts as a back up in an equally horrible offensive system. It's worth mentioning that 8 of the 10 starts Mason had were in his rookie season and he was nearly killed. Mitch was given the starting job his rookie season and didn't have to prepare as a backup.

I think Mason's arm strength is limited. Trubisky has better zip on the ball.

With that said, there are QBs like Chad Pennington who did well with the same issue.

I agree Mason's never really had a chance with the first team getting reps.

There should be good competition in the QB room we'll see how they respond.

I'm in the camp Trubisky has greater upside with the right system.

:this!:You make a really good point about Mason NOT having adequate coaching since he was drafted. The OC coaching has been well below the line and they’ve had a QB coach in name only. And Tomlin…well, he’s a defensive guy. So I completely understand and agree with what you’re saying. Everybody seems to be giving Mitch a pass because of poor offensive coaching and you could make the same argument with Mason. Not to mention he had a petulant child playing in front of him who had ZERO interest in helping him at all.

I actually believe Ben didn't like Him.....because He was the 1st Qb that He actually felt threatened by on the team....especially as He was getting older. JMO

That was the narrative after Ben wished that the 3rd round pick was to strengthen other parts of the team.

But Ben still did mentoring when he went down.
"Rudolph has shown steady progress as the quarterback, and he credits a lot of his success, especially in-game, to Roethlisberger’s help."

His wife flashing white supremacist hand sign. Nice. Here I was thinking there's absolutely no way Mason used racial slurs when being attacked by Myles Garret. I retract everything I said in Mason's defense.

Ok. I still think it's safe to conclude he's unfit to lead this team based on the fact that he's surrounding him self with the ALT right crowd. Hopefully they cut him soon.

Duck won the starting job when Rudolph was ineffective in the first half of a Bengals game. Hodges came in and brought the team from behind to win. Hodges kept the job for several weeks until he had a bad showing against the Jets. Rudolph came in and looked good but suffered a season ending injury in that game. Hodges then became the starter for the rest of the season.
