Namely right now is the Overtime Rule Changes. This one has actually been at the top of the NFL's agenda for years now but, due to the events of the matchup between Kansas City and Buffalo, I would imagine that the Owners do pass it this time for the entertainment value is simply too difficult too ignore any more.

Great change, I'm proud that the Rooney's name is attached to such a great rule. I would expand the definition of minority to include LGBTQ+ people too though.

    ***

PALM BEACH, Fla. -- All 32 NFL teams will hire a minority offensive assistant coach for the 2022 season, part of a series of policy enhancements announced Monday to address the league's ongoing diversity efforts.

The coach can be "a female or a member of an ethnic or racial minority," according to the policy adopted by NFL owners during their annual meeting, and will be paid from a league-wide fund. The coach must work closely with the head coach and the offensive staff, with the goal of increasing minority participation in the pool of offensive coaches that eventually produces the most sought-after candidates for head-coaching positions.

The original Rooney Rule was pretty close to affirmative action too. It's a good thing in my book.

Okay. I disagree. In my book it should always be the best person for the job.
I will say no more 'cause i think this thread will get locked down before long.

    Why only offensive

And I’m having a hard time seeing a female, or most anyone, who never played the game, getting respect from experienced players

Given that more than 70% of NFL players are people of color it shouldn't be difficult to find a minority who is a qualified assistant coach.

Hire the best person for the job. It’s like it went from one extreme to the other. “Hey look everyone we hired a minority to be, so and so is the first minority , did we mention that we hired a minority?

Moral of the story is treat people like people.

My first thought was "Are there really NFL teams without a minority offensive assistant?" I guess there are, but that's so to hard to believe, that there would be any NFL staff without a minority offensive assistant.

And of all the sports, football is probably the one which least requires actual playing experience. Todd Haley never played organized football at all. Not even high school. I don't believe Nate Hackett as every played football past HS. Charlie Weis never played either. Special case, but Stephen Belichick only played one year of football at Rutgers as a long snapper and is now the OLB coach in NE. In short, you can be an assistant in the NFL without ever playing. Not common, but not unheard of either.

I have 2 simple fix options

1 No more white coaches... fire them all.... problem solved

    Or

2 since 70% of the league is black... that's not diverse enough...50/50 spilt across the board... coaches. Players, training staff.... if you cut a wire player you have to replace him with a white player... and vice versa

Honestly, it's kind of surprising that so many fervent Steelers fans who will defend the Rooneys to the death disagree with such an innocuous policy. In a league that would be a shell of itself without black/minority players is it really that hurtful to you that 1 assistant coach out of probably 8-9 would be a minority of some sort?

The Rooney are rich white people who obviously believe in the value of diversity....surprising that so many Steelers fan would be so against it.

It's not the diversity, or the lack thereof. It's the possibility of someone unqualified getting the job just to fill a quota.

Without looking it up I am going out on a limb and say that there are zero teams in the NFL that don't have at least one minority assistant coach.

sf has had a female offensive assistant for a few years now. She was with the falcons before that. Apparently she’s good enough that San Fran brought her along with ? When he left the falcons and became the 49’ers head coach.

as for not having played and respect what about Todd Haley?
