Trubisky will have a better arm than 2020/2021 big Ben. And now that we have Cole and Daniels. That buys him a little more time.

At worst we have a QB making 7.5 million. Which is nothing. And we look at the draft of someone like MW falls to us in the first. Or ridder to us in the second.

I would have liked Jimmy. But he would have cost 4 times as much. And took at least a second. Which would hurt us on other holes to fill..... So it's nice to see we are not going to be that team of wanting an amazing QB with so many other homes of problems. (Like the falcons with Ryan).

It is less that Mitch makes us worse and more that he takes up money and a roster spot we could have used to get better. Vegas thinks we are less able to improve with him on the team and I have to agree with them.

From the words of some of the beat writers I have been reading, Steelers plan is to have a punishing defense and superior ground game which will keep them from having to reach for a QB. They feel having a QB like Trubisky will be enough to win with that formula.

So far, they are working on that ground game by addressing the line, need to start bringing in some defensive FA. Good place to start would be Mathieu. Then plug the middle so teams stop running all over us.

It's far north (which I dont consider to be far north) of 3.75 because they literally brought him in to start which we both mentioned...and we understand there's not going to be a QB competition for the starting position unless they draft a rookie that shows promise in camp. I still see you as being surprised they signed him for that little.

The error in that case wouldn't be signing Trubisky now. The error would be in misjudging him later and making a poor choice in the draft.

The Vikings game was brutal. I've been alive since 1972, been following Steelers since '79 and never saw a Steelers defense get shredded on the ground like that. Not even in the 80's.

    Winner.
I believe I seen Fred Taylor shred us in the 90s, and I can think of one , or two here ,and there, but this year was UN Freaking Believe able.
It wasn't just one guy. We have slowly had this problem growing from year 2 year for the last 5 years, but in the past We could jump out on a team, and they would stop running. Yes that Vikings game made Me:puking 3:.

Fred Taylor and Jamal Lewis had some good games against us in the late 90's, early 00's.... but nothing like the gashing we saw vs Vikings last year.

I hope He goes 2 the Browns. Texans are nowhere the depressing organizations the Browns are. People just don't want 2 admit that. Again 7 straight winning seasons, but one before Watson got 2 the Texans. Hell Browns can't say 2 winning seasons in a row in over 20 years. ....same winning in the playoffs with Watson, as before Watson got there, but everyone will act like the Texans are like Detroit, Browns, or Jets.

If he doesn't play well, it's a steal. Because for what amounts to NFL pennies at the most important position, it buys them time to re-evaluate the position again next year.

Matthieu will want $14m a year or thereabouts, great player but I don’t think they could possibly justify that when they still have to pay Minkah Fitzpatrick

Not really sure who else is out there but they should be looking for value in that second safety position rather than a splash signing IMO

OK, a diehard Bears fan checking in here in light of the recent former Bears signings... I was curious as to what the reaction would be of Steeler fans given the past media reporting on Trubisky which has been frankly awful. Having lived and died with Trubisky and having watched and rewatched his plays with the Bears here are some outsider thoughts...

    1. Class meets Class. He is lucky he is coming to a great franchise. Trubisky was loved by his teammates and got a raw deal in Chicago. He had too much class to say it directly when he was with Bills, but the Chicago staff screwed him over... I think the worst he ever said was how happy he was to be in Buffalo with a coaching staff that designed plays for their QB's skillsets. The Bears got him little or no help and the coaching was abysmal, so Tomlin (IMO a top 2 coach with BB) will be a breath of fresh air for him, as will be having actual receivers to throw to and (hopefully) an appreciative fan base. While I think Indy would have been better for him due to their OLine, I'm glad for him that he did not go to a grubby franchise devoid of receivers like the Giants.

    2. Robert Duran (hands of stone) Receivers. Apart from ARob (who put up great numbers when Trubisky played) he had no receivers in Chicago. More than 80% of the wide receivers he had with the Bears are no longer in the league they were so bad and they probably should never have been in the league. I think ARob and Mooney are the only ones left

Here is an example of the junk he had to put up with...

While it is just pre-season, here is an example of what he could do with a well designed offense, some protection, and OK receivers.

    3. Telling story from insiders. Trubisky was scheduled to meet with HC Nagy and he spent days preparing a bunch of notes on how to improve Nagy's offense (which even Nick Foles effectively said was a joke)... Nagy did not even show for the meeting... Trubusky was crushed... he just left the notes and due to his character he did not "leak" this to the press... after he was gone other players unhappy with the raw deal he got (and Nagy doing similar antics with them) leaked it instead.

    4. Weaknesses.
Certainly he has some... the biggest may be that he is too nice... he did not call out stupid coaches, receivers who ran wrong routes, etc. He does not have an innate grasp of offenses and instead needs to work at it... some was youth and inexperience, some was that the offense was indeed a joke, and some was on him for definitely just being an average QB in this regard (rather than a Peyton Manning type savant you would want with a high draft pick). He definitely needed good coaching... which it looks like he finally received in Buffulo to clean up his game... I suspect Tomlin will further help in this regard and in running a viable offense.

    5. O-Line? What O-Line. During his time with the bears he always had a bottom 5 in the league set of tackles which is not good for a young QB... guards were average to below average I know the Steelers OLine has some issues (considerable ones) but they will still be a notch above what he had with the Bears and his scrambling 1-2x a game for decent gains will be a pleasant surprise.

    6. Injuries. He has a history of disclosed injuries to his non-throwing shoulder which have influenced his performance, as well as a number of "play through" injuries typical of the position that only teammate knew he was playing through which is one reason he was likesd and respected by teammates. Likely the year off in Buffalo makes him 100%, but given his scrambling, the liklihood of injuries is probably higher than with QB's less inclined to takeoff and take hits, and given his slightly awkward running style (every 3rd scramble or so it looks like he is going to get a leg or knee injury to to the torque he places when cutting or sliding too late).

    7. Risk. There is certainly a chance that unlike Alex Smith, Trubisky is so screwed up by his Chicago time that he never takes the next step, but realistically, I think Alex Smith is a good comparison in terms of having the chance to change perceptions after a few years in the league. Moreover his win percentage against teams with winning percentages is not good, but IMO that is more a function of the team offense being so badly designed that well coached teams (winning teams) effectively knew exactly what was coming before the play started and Trubisky not having the ability (due to his own inexperience and lack of football savy as well as coaching directives) to effectively change plays. As one of his teammates admitted, it does not help to have the option of being able to change from one play that has no chance of working, to another play that has no chance of working.

In sum, the Steelers are getting a "good guy" who may or may not take it to the next level. A could certainly see him being a top 5-10 QB in the league, but could also see him languish in the 15-25 range if he is too shell shocked from his time in Chicago to ever recover or if he just never develops as a pre-snap reader of defenses and play diagnostician rather than a post-snap reactor. Certainly a great gamble for low cost and low commitment and clearly the best option available for the Steelers, a smart choice which once again shows why they are one of the elite league franchises... while my beloved Bears sqaundered some great opportunities with a talented defense by having a kicker who could not kick, a head coach who could not coach, and receivers who could not catch.... looks like we are in rebuild mode again.

Whether I’m surprised or not depends on what his paycheck will be with incentives that I see as likely to be earned. For example, if he gets an additional $3 million for a season where he starts 15+ games and we make the playoffs, then his pays goes to $10 million/year if that happens both seasons (that’s my expectation). If the incentives are harder to earn and he stays at $7 million/year even if he leads us to the postseason for 2 years, then yeah I’m a bit surprised.

There are no shortage of free agency surprises every year. Who expected that Christian Kirk would get @ contract that could make him the 3rd highest paid WR in the league? Also, closer to home I am more surprised at how low the contract value is for Daniels. A 24 year old guard who is on a solid upward trajectory? I would have expected a longer term deal for $12+ million/year. Kudos to KC and the gang for that one.

I wouldn’t. We know Brissett is a backup QB.

Verdict is still out on Trubisky.

Ok, so your concern is as follows:
    1. Trubisky improves as a QB to the point that he has a very good year and leads us to a playoff win; and,
    2. We extend Trubisky with a team friendly deal that’s about 1/2 the average pay for a franchise QB; and,
    3. Trubisky, who had improved as a QB, un-improves and reverts to the guy who was not successful enough to keep his job in Chicago; and,
    4. We draft a future franchise QB in the ‘22 or ‘23 draft; and,
    5. The QB that we drafted also isn’t any good, but we don’t figure it out until 2028…

Wow! That’s a lot of dominoes to fall! I almost got tired keeping track of them all. And to think, it all started with a 2 year, $14 million contract for a young veteran QB who will be paid just a smidge more than the highest paid backup QBs in the league. Let me try another one with fewer dominoes (really only 1):

Steelers trade multiple 1st round picks, plus additional picks and players for a franchise QB. They also pick up an average around $34 million/year in cap charges, thus limiting what can be built around the QB via the draft or free agency.

    1. Suppose that it turns out that the 22 allegations of sexual misconduct (and worse) end up being true, and said franchise QB slips and something happens again. That’s it. One domino.

I’m not saying that said franchise QB is guilty of anything, or that he will have further legal issues, but it seems more probable to me that there’s something to those 22 allegations and that single domino falls than the chain of dominoes you’ve set up from the Trubisky signing. It’s more likely that Trubisky proves that he’s not the answer and we suffer no more setback than we would with another low cost vet starting.

I quit reading as soon as you brought up Watson.... I said nothing of Watson so your thoughts on him are irrelevant to what I was talking about.

I said I hope they got it right because getting it wrong can set a team back 5 to 10 years. The rebuttle I got was he can be cut next year so why would it take 5 to 10 years.

You said its a lot of Dominoes to fall... I say it's the history of the NFL.

I showed you how Trubisky played just good enough to cost Chicago 8 picks and 6 years.... that's not conjecture its facts

Andy Dalton was just good enough for the Bengals for 9 years

The Browns are 5 years into figuring out if he is good

    Giants year 4

The 49ers moving on from Jimmy G after 5 years and will hope Lance excels quicky in a year or 2

My point is everyone is saying he is either going to be great or he is going to suck. My point is he is going to be just good enough.... people hate Ben because he only made 3SB.

I think Trubisky is going to be fine, I don't think he is drastically better than Mason/Haskins

What's his floor? I'll say Mason

What's his ceiling? Jimmy G?... maybe Cousins? That's pretty darn good

What's his reality? I'm thinking Andy Dalton....winning record. Gets it done just enough for almost a decade. That's not Dominoes that's the Bengals last 11 years..... just good enough

It's already been determined that no criminal charges will be filed against Watson....and for the record I hope the Steelers get in the sweepstakes still. If he misses a few games due to the conduct policy the Steelers plan was to start off with trubisky or worse anyway so theres nothing to lose. As long as they dont the sell farm to get him I would be all in on Watson....lest the Browns get him and then you have another division for the foreseen future that has a leg up on u.

If the Steelers choose to remain out of the running then we can only hope that Watson considers his chances of making it to a SB much more easier in the NFC then the AFC, because if he goes to the Browns it will be a near disaster.
