I would be okay with an outside hire at GM, and keep Hunt and Khan in their current roles.

Worth noting that Colbert himself was an outside hire at the time.

No way they wait till the end of the draft. I'm willing to bet it's announced by the end of the month.

They have no reason to rush the process.

They should just give tomlin the dual role. Things are going so well as is why not give him more power.

    <Mod Edit>

Then we pick an 360lb nose tackle to fix the defense, a 3 - 4 defense doesn't work without an anchor in the middle.

My sarcastic post is 5 minutes old and I have a dislike already. I must have forgot how delicate and PC we all are nowadays.

So I am using uncle Leo's excuse " I am old and confused "

Not sure if you knew they have interviewed him, I just heard. The latest interviewees:

John Wojciechowski (Green Bay, co-director of player personnel)
Morocco Brown (Indy - Director of college scouting)
John Spytek (Tampa Bay -VP of player personnel)
Dan Morgan (Panthers - assistant GM)

    Dan Morgan intrigues me.

He was director of player personnel in Buffalo from 2018-2020, so he had a role in building that team to where it is now.

So you don't want the new GM to learn the Steelers draft process?

    A new GM.
    Plenty of Cap Space.
    A nice compliment of Picks.
    A somewhat re-tooled team.

I don't blame them for taking their time. I feel that Colbert will stay with the team and even at a reduced role, his guidance is still something to respect.
And in a reduced role, maybe it affords him more quality time without all the distractions.
Free Agency starts March 16 (legal tampering the 15th)
    April 28 is the draft.

I agree with the idea that it would be nice to have the new GM on board before the draft.
I'm not so sure about Free Agency, though there are some positives in having one.
Also, after March 1, they would need permissions to speak to candidates.

They have talked to some good candidates; Andy Weidl is a good prospect of recent. I hate Philadelphia, but one cannot be blind to what they do good.
    I personally like Hunt.

I've heard whispers of a good Vet CB being on the radar during Free Agency, but rumors are just that rumors.
Even with good cap space, I expect they'll focus on keeping the players they want to keep and maybe mid-priced free agents to compliment the draft.
One thing I saw continually go wrong in Washington was signing big contract guys and not getting any performance out of them.
The Steelers really haven't done that and combined with the fact that they 'are not 1 big time player away from a Super Bowl' will temper them in free agency.

Though the biggest gorilla in the room is the QB spot. On the surface they seem to be confident in Mason.
I could see them going after a Tyrod Taylor or maybe take a chance on Trubisky. I doubt any trades will happen.
They do seem adamant on 4 QB's in camp.
In about 19 days we shall see.

While there is some validity to having someone hired and learning the ropes before the draft I think it speaks more to the situation they find themselves in right now and that is the most important draft in the last 20 years as well as free agency. Im sure the thinking is they need to be focused on the draft with no distractions or learning curve.

What are you going to do, tell him to come in, sit down and shut up. At this point he/she would just be a distraction.

If he starts fairly soon after the draft, perfect. He can have a full year to learn the process. A process he should already know. KC is still going to be around to show him the way.

Absolutely the right move. I just went through this with the process of replacing me when I retired.
