Is Teryl Austin the Next DC??

It's an overblown story IMO, you don't see him doing it the entire game when the team is on defense.

 

Dan Campbell took over playcalling from his OC during this season with Detroit .

 

That was my point, fans making a big deal out of this like he's making all the calls on gameday, it's his right if he wants to get involved with the defensive game plan.

 

Did they? Or did he just fail to to properly take over for LeBeau?

I don’t know. But if a DC is doing a good job, a HC has better things to go.

 

Now I have seen that a lot before. I remember Cowher taking over for.....Now I don't remember who, but Cowher took over offense play calling one year. I didn't like it then, and I don't like it now. Way to much for a Head coach 2 do IMO for them calling all the plays on game day. Yes ....Saying yes, or No on something of course, but not a whole game. He needs 2 be able 2 have His fingers in everything, and oversee everything. JMO

 

I’m reading Cowher’s book now and he talks about the one game where he decided to take over for the OC. It was a disaster. He made it clear the HC can not possibly also call the plays on either side during a game.

Cowher did it because Ray Sherman sucked when he was the OC.

It is a start at least. Not sure if there are other possible interviews but... it is a start.

 

Leslie Frazier calls a nearly identical defense to Tomlin and should be available.

 

Patrick Graham has mainly cut his teeth in this league as a Defensive Lineman/Linebackers Coach. I assume that, assuming Graham gets hired that Austin is to stay on staff? I understand the expansion of the Rooney Rule is playing a bit of a part here but the logic behind such a move is curious to say the least. His best year as a DC was in 2020 with the New York Giants; 10th in both Total Rushing Yards Given Up and Rush Yards Per Game per ESPN. However, per teamrankings, in 2020, the Giants finished 22nd in First Downs Given Up on Running Plays and were 18th on First Down Run Percentage.

 

Reading around, it sounds like Giants fans don't want to lose Graham. The new GM there is interviewing him for the HC job.

I'm not getting my hopes up about us hiring outside the organization. I still think it's Austin's job if he wants it.

 

The Steelers HISTORY is they generally like to hire/promote people they know and from within. This philosophy is consistent with the Steelers winning culture.

Like many coaches in the NFL Austin had some successes and failures.

 

Rooney is content with basically just competing and having a chance to make the playoffs. He is hell bent on keeping the same head coach here for as long as he wants to be seeing they have had 3 coaches in 52 years. He cares more about keeping that tradition going and not messing up its legacy rather then winning games.
