This is why your definition doesn't work especially when lumping everything together and labeling it as "rebuilding". Two years ago after an embarrassing 1st round exit the Penguins leadership fired all of Mike Sullivan's staff and replaced them with new coaches for him while retaining Sully. After the entry draft and the first month of league play which was a slow start for the pens, Rutherford the Penguins GM abruptly resigns, there were rumors he tried to trade one of the remaining members of what the Pens call the "core" in a move to bring a Stanley Cup caliber goalie to Pittsburgh and gain some cap space. The rumors were that Mario or Morehouse blocked the move. So the team needed to hire a new GM, they hire Hextal as GM and Brian Burke to be special advisor of hockey operations. Due to the expansion draft the Pens had to leave x amount of players unprotected for the expansion draft. they bring in Jeff Carter at the trade deadline, make several other moves and are looking to be competitive this season heading into the final stretch of the season while keeping the "core" of Crosby, Malkin and Letang together for another run at the cup. Your definition as you state it means that the Pens have been rebuilding for 2 years or more and not doing the normal business of a sports team trying to win championships.

Good! We don't need to sell the farm for a 39 year old QB, you never can tell when age will catch up to someone ..

You want proof the Steelers do not think they are in are in a rebuild?

EXHIBIT A. TJ WATTs mega contract. Why pay the highest paid defensive player so you can blow it all up and field a contender by the time his contract is expiring.

EXHIBIT B. The contract they are about to give Minkah

    HACK

Rodgers stays: It would be easier for the Packers to get JuJu and fix their Special Teams.

They can think all they want, doesn't mean that's the reality of the situation.

Rodgers isn't coming to Pittsburgh and it's not because the state of roster.

    1. He wants to be closer to the west coast.
    2. He wants to be a co-GM. You really think Art will allow that?
    3. We don't have the assets to trade.

There's a certain member on this board who gets really upset if you say Rodgers isn't coming here. Anyone seen him?

Why on god’s green earth would they trade away two foundational pieces? Hope and pray they can draft two more foundational pieces?

oh wait! To switch to a 4-3?

But Rogers just lost by barely putting up any points with an offense we wish that we had, at home (again!) in Lambeau, in the snow.

Just think, this *amazing QB* has had great teams and only been to one Super Bowl while playing a pretty long career in a conference that mostly didn’t have Tom Brady spoiling hopes like Ben did. He barely had to face Manning too until he was a shell of himself.

Maybe he’s not our answer and not better than what Ben was for us in his best seasons.

I think we had a seriously great shot at winning that 3rd Super Bowl against him if Mendy doesn’t fumble the game away at the end.

Your need to be a dick about things not withstanding he makes a valid point. If it is a full rebuild as you are calling it wasting money and trade capital locking up Watt and Fitz long term to watch their careers squandered the next 4 plus years of a rebuild is stupid when you can gain cap space and draft picks by dumping them.

Your jab about the 4-3 is the same. Elvis was talking about using current 3-4 personnel in a 4-3 scheme which would mesh with Tomlin's favored Tampa-2 coverage scheme. No one suggested dumping players in implement a switch to a 4-3

Naw. Watt and Minkah are young enough that the team should be able to find a QB in the next few years and still have them 30 or younger. Especially Minkah who is only 25. Have to agree with Strummer on that.

In terms of finishing the rebuild we need a franchise QB. Do I trust Tomlin to find a franchise QB? Hell no. Already off to a terrible start with this OC and talking about "mobility." The Rams upgraded from Goff. We will be lucky to get a Goff. The 49ers have two franchise QBs on their roster.

We will probably be taking a "mobile QB" in the 2nd to run a college offense predicated on pre-snap motion (as if this will confuse good pro defenses), running (which Tomlin hates) and YAC from short routes.

So yeah. I agree that Minkah and Watt will have wasted careers just like Heyward, Haden, Shazier etc. in terms of being on a competitive team. But I think in good faith the proper way to rebuild is by keeping the best young players and trading or cutting the old. Strummer is right not to want players who have made All-Pro cut in their 20s on principle.

It all depends on the cap space you have available and the holes you need to fill via draft or FA. In 3 years Watt and Minkah could be at their peak and great cornerstones for a solid defense but they will undoubtedly be eating up a ton of cap space while the team still needs a probowl LT and solid center a QB that isn't a four year project, some wr's by that point and so on. I agree that you don't necessarily dump those two especially if the team remains just piece or two from being a serious contender but if it is a full rebuild you can get a lot of return for them while getting younger and cheaper. Strummer does have a valid point you don't dump that quality of player but it doesn't mean the discussion shouldn't happen because its capital. Its like the Bell conundrum give him a huge amount of cash or get some assets in a trade and get a younger back.

4-3 personnel and 3-4 personnel aren’t interchangeable. Rebuild or not it makes zero sense to get rid of two core pieces to build upon. Both of you are assuming it will take 3,4,5,6 years.

what makes zero sense is trying to convert a guy you pay 30million a year to a position he’s a. Never played b. Not built to play.

Goff for Stafford is a lateral move unless he wins it all I don’t see that happening.

No You are correct, but the alignments can be the same. It just doesn't work as well without the proper players.
