Can a team kick a field goal on all 4 downs if they miss the first, second and third one or does the ball automatically get turned over after a miss?

If the Steelers Suisham missed the Field goal Monday night on first down could they have kicked another one?

    What is the rule?

I think if you miss you then don't get the ball back? If so, why not? If you kick on first and 10 and miss then why couldn't it be 2nd and 17 after the spot of where you kicked it from. Miss from there, 3rd and 24. Miss from there 4th and 31.

I'm 99% sure it doesn't work that way but why not? It's not a fumble, INT or Punt.

BTW- I feel really dumb asking this.

The only way they would get another chance on 1st thru 3rd down, is if the snap or hold is screwed up and the ball is never kicked. Once the ball is kick, thats all you get, no matter what down it is.

It is the same as a punt, since a missed FG can be returned the same as a punt... if it is short and caught in the endzone.

If you miss the kick attempt, the other team gets the ball on the next down. Usually, a team will go for the earlier FG attempt in case of a bad snap or such where they'll still get another attempt.

I've had Suishams back since he got here but i was very nervous about that kick. I don't know why they didn't take two cracks at running it for a TD, then kick it on 3rd down if you didn't get in. The chances of fumbling and missing the kick are probably about the same. Weren't they at the 5 yard line?

    Thanks all.
That is what I thought but wasn't 100% sure.
They say ther are no dumb questions but I will admit this one was borderline.

I don't get your point, if you assume that the percentages are the same - I think the conclusion would be kick it for the win. Suisham hasn't missed an extra point since 2009 with Dallas so I think the kick is a slightly higher percentage choice.

Also, it was a wet, cold day and the Steelers already had problems holding on to the ball. Why take a chance when any kicker in the NFL should be able to kick the game winner?

Yeah, that's true :lolol: I guess I'm just more nervous going for a kick there then trying to run it in a couple times.

They were owning us. 1 point or 10,000 it didnt matter. Take the cheap shot, get the win, and go home. Best call the whole night.

Actually, there is one scenario where you can attempt a second FG attempt. It happened in 2002, coincidentally during a Steeler game. If the FG is blocked and doesn't go over the line of scrimmage, and is recovered by the kicking team with downs still remaining, they can kick it again.

When the Steelers hosted the Browns in 2002, the game went to overtime, and the Steelers lined up to kick the winning kick on an early down. Kick was blocked backward and they then won it on the next play on a good FG. I believe Todd Peterson was the kicker, although he would soon be replaced midseason by Jeff Reed. Peterson had a hell of a time kicking at Heinz Field, often kicking low line drives.

yes i think the kick to be considered attempted has to pass the line of scrimmage ,otherwise is like a fumble

Just thought they'd get it to the center hash for him with a kneel down play to make him not have to put that much of a cut on it from the 5. That close in it becomes almost an intentional pull to get it through.
