So what stops the Raiders and Chargers from tying?

If the Raiders tie they play the Chiefs. If they win they play the Bengals. Both are good, but I'd rather not play a division rival in the playoffs. Also if they win, they're the 5th seed which gives them A chance for a home playoff game in the AFCCG. 7th seed has no chance.
So the Raiders DO have something to play for.

They are rivals... can you imagine this steelers and ravens game.. starting out with a handshake and steering to just tie?

Agree. Highly unlikely. Not predicting that it will happen. Just suggesting that it could.

I don’t think they will take a knee all game but if it’s close or tied low Both teams could absolutely play super conservative

A tie is very unlikely, if both teams go at it honestly and it ends in a tie then fair enough but the odds of that happening are tiny.

If there is any evidence or hint of playing for a tie both teams should be suspended from the postseason and docked draft picks.

Both teams will have their foot on the throttle from the get-go. Win and you're in, lose and you're done. It's the NFL, nobody enters these games assuming a tie is even possible, given its rarity.

Broncos, Chiefs, Raiders and Chargers loath each other. Some of the best football I've watched have been AFC West divisional games even if both teams stink. They will not do anything that benefits the other. Both will play to annihilate each other.

This all assumes that enough players even know a game can end in a tie. Right ?

And if NE wins, they're 6th with a win and play Buffalo. 7th with a tie and play KC.
Im still avoiding KC and would rather play Cincinnati or Buffalo before them

If tie tonight, you will never see another tie in the NFL.

If they clearly played for a tie then The "Best Interest of the Game" provision should kick in from the commish - award the last two playoff seats to the Steelers and the Colts.....disqualifiy the shameful. It won't happen but it should.

would it be harder for this kind of thing to happen if there were no ties? Like the college model?

Think of it like this - when it was 13-13 and the Steelers were facing 4 & 9 from Baltimore's 41 with about two and a half minutes left in OT.

The Steelers went for it because they had to win. A tie was equivalent to a loss.

Tonight, either team would/could/should punt in that spot because a tie would be equivalent to a win.

Actually the Steelers-Ravens game likely would have ended up in a tie if that was a good result for both teams.

No way the Steelers would have gone for it late in OT when they could have simply punted and let the Ravens try and score.

if the game tonight goes into OT, the chance of a tie is much greater than normal, as both teams will play more conservatively.
