So what stops the Raiders and Chargers from tying?

It would be the biggest scandal in sports since the Chicago Black Sox. It would result in lawsuits galore; from fans, to tv networks, to sportbooks, etc.. government intervention, fines from the FCC, people would be fired left and right, coaches and players banned... and the integrity of the league would be forever stained.

An agreement to tie is not happening.

Neither should fear the Steelers in the playoffs. They both should want to knock out a division opponent.

 

They are not going to tie. Steelers will be in Kansas City next week.

What you’re suggesting is nuts. Now if they end up late in overtime and each team calls plays to play for the tie so they guarantee a playoff spot for themselves then yeah that’s possible.
But two teams orchestrating a tie would be devastating for the league.

I think they'll play to win early, but if the game gets late or to OT, they may play to just not lose.

If they tie the Raiders get Chiefs and they want to avoid that as much as the Steelers do. If the Pats lose, the Raiders can get up to the 5.

Chargers would be the 6 with a win or a tie, out with a loss unless the Pats win and Bills lose which gets them to the 5 with a win.

 

That makes sense for sure but what nags at the back of my head is the strange NFL season we just went through.

Generally I'd have zero interest in this night game but suddenly I'm looking forward to it.

 

But once the game is on how can you trust the other guy to lay down? You are going to want to secure your place in the post-season and score as much as you can.

It's beyond dangerous to play for a tie. I'd say it's impossible. If it ends up a tie I'll throw my TV out the window though.
