Three-way tie for the lead between Jared Allen, Justin Houston, and Mark Gastineau. Should be guaranteed DPOY if he gets it

(*) No, I don't count Strahan's BS gimme sack of Favre to get the record. :puking 3:

Considering that Watt had 3.5 sacks and 12 (yes, 12) hurries, the last time we faced the Ravens, I'm looking for big things next week

Having missed 2 games due to injuries, Watt will break the record in 15 games

There was no asterisk on stats when the league went from 14 to 16 games so there shouldn’t be one going from 16 to 17. Besides, Watt has only played in 14 games ;)

I thought Watt only had 3 sacks. Not sure where the 4th one came from. :hmm:

Again, there is nothing that distinguishes records when the NFL only had 14 games so why should there be something with 17 games?

Not sure but they kept saying when #22 broke # 32s record last night that #32 set the record in 14 games , ... I hope Watt breaks it by 2-3 sacks, Sunday,,, so there will be no argument abt it in some peoples eyes

Not arguing with you but a person could grade sack totals by era.

5 of the top 10 seasons for sacks per game per team came in the 1980s when White, Taylor, Gastineau etc. put up staggering numbers. The 1980s was the best decade for pass rushing in terms of per game totals.

In 1986 the NFL average for one team was 2.7 per game as compared to 2.3 per game in 2021.

    20.5 / 2.7 = 7.6 LT 1986

    20.5 / 2.3 = 8.9 TJ 2021

    22 / 2.4 = 9.2 Deacon Jones 1968

You'd need some kind of comparison like that to compare eras to see who actually was the best pass rusher or had the best season.

Don Hutson should always be called a top 5 receiver but never is because players aren't measured by how much better they were compared to other players in their eras; but are compared directly and across eras (which I'm told is never done and you can't do).

2021 is the 41st best season for NFL pass rushers as measured in team average sacks per game. 2001 was 31st when Strahan "set the record." Gastineau got 22 in the 4th best season for sacks.

I'd say this season by TJ Watt and the 1968 season by Deacon Jones are the best in terms of sack totals vs NFL averages for their eras... other than some guy named Al Baker I had never heard of who had 23 in 1978 in the 54th ranked season as measured in sacks per game.

Al Baker numero uno. Watt needs 2 sacks on Sunday to beat him. Al Baker is the man with 23.

I really hope T.J. Watt breaks the sack record and win "Defensive Player Of The Year". If that happens, I believe J.J. and T.J. will be the first brothers to both win the award in NFL history.
