I know people hate him and I know the playoff success hasn't been there but it's still impressive to coach a team for 15 years and never have a losing season in the Salary cap era. No other coach in NFL history has started his head coaching career with 15 non-losing seasons. Marty Schottenheimer had 14. I thought for sure the year Ben went down for the season there was no way they would go 8-8.

Think about all the talent and money that went into the Browns.
A team many predicted would win the division.
Now they've gone over 30 years without consecutive winning seasons.

Or consider the Ravens, the other team expected to win the division.
After being 8-3, there is a decent chance they will wind up with a losing record and fail to make the playoffs.

Having no losing seasons isn't the best result, but knowing the Steelers are competitive and fighting for the playoffs almost every season beats the alternative.

Nothing wrong with acknowledging this achievement, it’s impressive. Especially 2019 with no Ben and a reindeer and a duck throwing the football and this season with this team. They actually won this game with Ben throwing for 123 yards, Harris ran for more yards then Ben passed for by 55 yards.

    Congrats, coach :applaud:

Now go top it off with a playoff win.

Well... kinda. A two part answer I am afraid.

Prior to his first losing season, Tom Landry amassed a generation of winning without a losing record. That said, he owns the most ties during that span as well; 6 total to his credit. The issue with Landry's ties is that all of his 6 ties occurred before the AFL/NFL Merger.

If the debate is based on if Tomlin has the most ties?! In the 100+ year history of the NFL?! No. However, since 1970?! Yes. Schottenheimer only has one to his credit.

Congrats MT. Great accomplishment. It sure has been nice not having to endure what the Browns have gone through.

It doesn't bother me. I just find everyone raving about it to be hilarious. Celebrate mediocrity! :)

Ok, tongue removed from cheek. Yes. A streak like that isn't common. Never having a losing season is something to be impressed by. BUT, 8-8 (or 8-8-1 if it happens) isn't anything to be excited about either. It's like praising your kid for getting a C minus average. Sure, he/she passed. But it's not good either. Or getting excited because a swimmer consistently places 6th, 7th or 8th. Sure, he never medals, but at least he didn't drown, right?

It's not that we're haters. We just have a different standard of what "success" means. And maybe we like to do a little tweaking too. ;)

Since MT took over in 2007, every team in the AFC North has occupied the cellar except one - the Steelers

    Cowher
    • 1 x Super Bowl champion (XL)
    • 2x AFC Champion (1995, 2005)
    • 6x AFC Divisional Champion (1994, 1995, 1997, 2001, 2004, 2005)
    • Regular season: 149–90–1 (.623)
    • Postseason: 12–9 (.571)

    Tomlin
    • 1 x Super Bowl champion (XLIII)
    • 2x AFC Champion (2008, 2010)
    • 7x AFC Divisional Champion (2007, 2008, 2010, 2014, 2016, 2017, 2020)
    • Regular season: 151–84–2 (.641)
    • Postseason: 8–8 (.500)
Remember how bad the Steelers were under Cower 1998-2000. People wanted Cowher fired and that it was the 2nd coming of the 80’s. That didn’t stop Cowher from getting into the Hall.

By the way, Tony Dungy is also in with 1 super bowl and a Postseason record of 9–10 (.474)

John Madden, 1 super bowl, post season record of 9–7

EDIT: What’s really amazing is that WHEN Tomlin is inducted into the HoF, he will be the 3rd Steelers coach in, and that would give the Steelers back to back to back HoF coaches which is amazing. There are not a lot of NFL coaches in the HoF as it is.

For the edit, no other Franchise can lay claim to that, "America's Team", Packers, Patriots, Giants and 49ers included. Even among the richest historical values of those franchises, Pittsburgh sticks out. What did John Facenda say about the Steelers?!

"There are 27 teams in Professional Football.... then there are the Pittsburgh Steelers."

This post was the right thing to do. Congrats Mike! I take pride in it for sure.

We all know a HUGE part of Mike's success was having a franchise QB. This next chapter in Mike's Coaching career will be, to quote the TV show Laugh In, "very interesting".

You do know the Steelers win projection was 8.5, they're actually on track to finish where most people thought. Nobody had this team winning the Super Bowl, the talking heads had them finishing third or last in the division.

I only remember 2 or three ties in that time.
