I'm putting this in the Steelers forum and not general nfl talk because I feel with the emphasis on the new taunting rule that this will bite the Steelers sooner rather than later. So here are 2 examples of non calls during their increased emphasis on taunting.

This next one I'd reminiscent of Juju on Burfict

How are either of these two plays not flagged?

Taunting is a joke penalty. Unless it's completely over the top, the refs should just hold onto their flags. Players take a lot more crap from fans then they ever do from opposing players.

It's a highly subjective rule, what's considered taunting by one official may not be by another. The Zeke high step looked like taunting no reason for it in a game.

Just showboating if you ask me. Just the same as doing a flip into the end zone. I didn't think it was any big deal. Deion Sanders used to do it all the time and actually made a career out of it.

I always felt that Sanders high stepping down the sidelines after a pick was part in parcel if his Primetime persona and not a haha can't stop me thing.

I'm sure AB never did that and Tomlin would never let it happen.

This is what happens after 2-3 generations of participation trophies. Penalties for hurting someone’s feelings!

Yep. And it is only getting worse. Now they are slinging mud at John Gruden for something he wrote 11 years ago. I find it funny that the youth of today spout every feeling onto social media. I guess they don't think too far into the future and how the stuff they put out there or do will ever come back to bite them.

That's exactly the point of it. Just like many penalties. Highly subjective.

That's what allows refs to influence games while having plausible deniability. Only takes a few well timed calls. Holding. PI, etc.

No. I'm not saying the NFL is rigged. I AM saying it's influenced. Sometimes heavily. But even with help, sometimes, the team they want to win just doesn't. To rig a game, you need players and coaches on board. Not gonna happen. Too many spokes in the wheel. But influencing? 2 refs will do it. Hell, sometimes, even the ref in the booth in NY leniently exercises "subjective" judgement. <Cough> Looking at you, Al Riveron <cough>

Yep and every time we discuss it people go I hardly think all 32 owners and Goodell are part of a massive conspiracy to fix games. My response to that is the same as yours. You don't need 32 owners and the commissioner just maybe three people and the most important of them should be pretty well established in the league office so he can present area that the league should focus on to the Commissioner and AL. That's all you need.

I've been saying this for Years. No Players, or coaches, but refs....definitely....I don't think the want 2 Change a win....just keep points around where they want them, but sometimes screwing around with this causes a the wrong team 2 lose.

It really is something to consider too. Not sure if I mentioned if before but one of my cousins went from being a minor college volleyball coach to taking a more secure job working with a company that works with the government at a military base. At the time of his initial interview before the security check got under way they recommended he get off social media and stay off because that way leads to problems. Kids today don't think about that stuff.

Now, it’s not what is being said, it’s videos that they’re sharing. If it’s verbal, you can always claim it was taken out of context. With pictures and video, there’s no plausible deniability. Right Favre? Right Weiner?

As a side note, I watched a good documentary on Hedake Smith and the ASU point-shaving a while back. Really interesting how it all played out.

Kids any day never thought about that stuff. Kids these days have to think about how long their stupid actions will be around. Obviously many adults don't think about it either, seeing how many are getting called out for their past behaviors on various digital media.

Nature of them being kids. People trot that trope out all the time about kids of today.

That's tame compared to what they do now...

Man what a great 5th round pick once he matured as a DB.

I always thought that Gay would make a good DB coach. The guys that just have raw talent a lot of times don't translate to great coaches. The guys that had to really work on their craft to get better are the ones I think know what it takes to be successful in this league.

Influence for what reason though? Are you saying the refs actually want and conspire to make a specific team win? Who is pulling those strings?

The problem with conspiracies is people can't keep their mouths shut, and if there's money on the outcome of a fixed game, the authorities are pretty good at figuring that out. Vegas knows how much money will be placed on each game. It's very predictable, and when there's an anomaly, it's easily detected. Just look at the Hedake Smith scandal. He didn't even throw games, just shaved points, but the FBI figured it out almost immediately.

Winning with class is long gone. Game has turned into a clown act if someone does the ordinary. If you can't enforce the rule consistently, get rid of it. Wait, does that get rid of all the rules? JK
