The rookie QB contract is a valid point Scribe but this team has a lot of other holes like OL and CB that need filled while this Rookie QB hopefully improves by year 2 or 3. Hard to imagine this monster contract won’t hurt being able to sign those other areas of need even if the cap is going up.

I guess my point is realistically this whole Ben retirement tour and rookie QB hopeful development will be a 3/4 year process with this being year 1 of that process. It’s also TJs 5th year and the odds are by year 7 or 8 he will be fading or hurt by the time this best case scenario timeframe happens.

By "holding up" I didn't mean "suiting up and playing". I meant playing well. At seasons end last year, he was looking old and tired.....because HE IS.

Not having Ben's replacement has nothing to do with Watt or the deal he just signed. Having Watt won't preclude us from getting the next guy and it for sure will make the next guy have an easier time winning.

I understand what you are saying but this team has plenty of other holes to fill and for a team rebuilding I don’t think spending that much on an OLB is smart. It’s not that I think TJ isn’t a great player it’s just his best years (right now) will be when the Steelers are irrelevant bottom feeders.

Your argument seems to be that because Ben is probably going to retire after this year we should not try to keep our other great players. I disagree with that. TJ is one of the top couple pass rushers in the NFL. Pass rusher is one of the most important positions in the NFL. Letting TJ walk does nothing to help this team stay competitive post Ben.

It’s not about not keeping players it’s about paying someone a ludicrous amount at a position other than QB that will hinder the rebuild. QB is the only position that should get that type of money IMO. No QB no shot in today’s game unfortunately.

Ok. I simply disagree. I think TJ is worth it. Edge is vitally important to our defense and TJ is the best there.

When did "today's game" begin? After Eli? Flacco? a greatly diminished Peyton? Foles? I still believe a great defense wins championships!

I mean TB certainly skews this being non human and all but I’d say 80% of the last 20 years have been won by HOF QBs… TB Peyton Eli Brees and Ben? Another 10% with guys like Wilson and Mahomes that will most likely be HOFers in a couple years.

Some of them had good Ds like Peyton with Denver but clearly you are not winning it all 9 out of 10 years without a super star QB.

Maybe with Ben in his prime and TOMLIN MIA signing a guy like Watt would help greatly. Just not seeing it right now. I mean in TJS 2 playoff games so far he may as well been in street clothes, Made 0 difference. We shall see.

Think about it this way in TJs 4 years with the Steelers we have won 0 playoff games. I mean clearly we could do that without him.

You're including Eli and Peyton in his second win as elite?

That's because the team was last in rushing, that won't happen this season, Ben won't have to throw 40-50 times every game.

I wonder how true the story is that Watt walked in to Rooney's office, asked where they were at and then told his agents he was signing the contract? Here's Pat McAfee's take on it.

TJ Watt now has the two most valuable ACLs in franchise history. The Steelers should assign on field and off field security guards to make sure nothing happens to them.

Actually, he got zero dollars. He sat out a year. The bone head lost a lot of money.

    Wallace did the same.

Steelers assigned security to Ben. How did that work out?

If he had held out, they would not have had to franchise him. He still would have owed a year.

Because they're not? They're #8 on the all time list of wins/losses.

And I never said they were bad, go look up what the word archaic means.
