The Steelers had arguably the best defense last season for most part WITHOUT Devin Bush and Bud Dupree. The Steelers were 1st in sacks and 3rd in forced turnovers in 2020. The Steelers had a championship level defense for the majority of the season. They just messed up against the Browns in the playoffs (It still hurts). T.J. Watt was a big part of the Steelers being a great defense last year. His ability to get off the line of scrimmage and to go after quarterbacks is insane. Most teams have to put two guys to block him. I do want to see him become better in coverage. Not that he is bad. But he can improve.

Like the deal even if it is a year or two too short.

A new QB would be on a rookie deal, same with Najee. I'm really unsure how this really hinders the Steelers ability to be ok cap wise.

T.J. Watt does not drop in coverage anymore as that is honestly, not the ideal way to use him. Even if he were, T.J. Watt is still a Top 5 Rush Linebacker in Coverage. Dare I say he still just might be the best. Again though, T.J. Watt's job is now more focused on pass rushing as his drops in coverage in 2018, the only season he posted a double digit percentile in dropping in coverage, was due to the loss of Ryan Shazier.

As you said, T.J. Watt's primary goal is to rush the QB. Even if he does not get there, T.J.'s mere presence forces opposing Coaches to placate attention to T.J.s side. A one on one against T.J. Watt, no matter the opposing Tackle, is truly playing with fire.

That's probably why the deal got done because it was 4 years.

Per overthecap, this deal saved a couple of million ($8 million cap hit), $11 million in cap space.

I probably still don't understand it well enough but how is the 80 million spread or is that included in the salary? Because that would be 16 mill per year divided by 5, but obviously that's not tacked on.

The 80 million guaranteed is over the first 3 years (2021 included), including the $35 million signing bonus and salaries. The quoted numbers comparing deals are usually "new money" so they don't count what is actually paid this year above the $10 million he would have got, just over the 4 years added

Draft JT Daniels next year. Then JT and TJ will lead the team for a decade.

Please no to JT Daniels. Barring a ridiculously good season from him, there are much better options.

Some of the guaranteed base salaries for ‘22 and ‘23 will probably be converted to bonuses in the ‘22 and ‘23 offseasons (i.e. restructuring).

Benny probably is trying to troll but I don’t disagree with the premise. This season is about to be a cold dose of reality to all of us of how far away we are and how many holes we have. If TOMLIN can go 9-8 this year it will be a miracle and honestly a good coaching job by him. Putting this much money into an OLB while the team is rebuilding with no QB and to be honest although things can change no real stud QB in this years draft, what’s the point? We are 3/4 years away from being a contender best case scenario by that time all we will have is TJ Watt highlights from 2020

Near as I can tell we're stacked everywhere for the future except QB, o-line, and safety....
Those positions will be restocked with picks 1-4.... Keep in mind that we'll probably have 2 3rd Rd picks courtesy of the comp formula for losing Bud Dupree...... Pretty sure we'll have more than enough draft capital

Ask he has not done enough to warrant the 5th year option and I feel he isn't going to get crazy money elsewhere. He is an average player who has that distinction due to his slight improvement. The Steelers can get a better player. He was a reach as a 1st round pick.
