Maybe that Tuitt has gotten a little too round?

Can someone who understands better than I, explain why a team would use the IR instead of the PUP in this situation?

I believe Tuitt is eligible for the PUP, which he can be activated from after week 6. He can stay on the list until after week 12.

The IR would keep him out until after week 8.

From my understanding, the PUP is more restrictive about eligibility, but more flexible regarding time. Woudln't the Steelers benefit from a wider timeframe for Tuitt to (potentially) return?

IIRC the rules around IR were relaxed a little because of the pandemic. I am not sure of the exact details but I don’t think he necessarily needs to stay out until week 8 if he goes on IR

From what I read, tuitt can go on the PUP because he wasn’t on it when camp started. Apparently, you have to be on it from Day 1, and can’t go on it afterward. It’s intended for off season injuries that haven’t recovered yet, and can’t be used to stash a guy after camp starts. Maybe they should have put Tuitt on it from the start.

Maybe they thought his "knee" would be better by now. They should have been more honest and called it a head injury.

Inside sources have indicated to me the contract negotiations with TJ Watt have been halted. Citing they are not willing to make TJ the highest paid player defensive in the league with two years left of contractual control under the franchise tag. The front office has indicated they will exercise their right to tag Watt through the 2022-2023 season.

“The NFL just made it official in a memo to clubs: Unlimited players can return from a team’s injured reserve list in 2021 and they’re eligible after missing three games, rather than eight weeks, per source. A popular change spawned by COVID challenges stays for another year.
Worth noting: As in the past, only players on the 53-man roster after cutdown are eligible to be designated for return from IR (or NFI). Limits “stashing” scenarios. So, this year that’s anytime after 4 p.m. Eastern on Wednesday, Sept. 1.” — Tom Pelissero, NFL Network

Don’t believe this at all. I’d be shocked if he is not signed before game day

I am very disappointed in how this has played out so far, I think
season ticket holders shelling out big bucks should also be perturbed.
