Kind of a weak nonsensical comeback. Do they shoot people out of a cannon into the HOF now?

This preseason is different than others in the past. Yes, we had the extra HOF game, but there is also now a bye week for all teams in the NFL after the final preseason week. Every team seems to going about things differently, because nobody really knows the absolute best approach for certain. Ideally, your team gets through preseason without injuries and isn't rusty week 1.

I get it just busting your chops. Shooting into the sun as an expression I've heard before. But shooting into the HOF seemed like a reach. It's like when George came up with jerk store on Seinfeld.

Not doubting that he will end up in the HOF because he will.

That RB draft class is having no luck this year.

Cam Akers, JK Dobbins, Travis Etienne all lost for the year. All those teams have better options at #2 than the Steelers. This is why I prefer RBBC to having one guy, but if insist on having one guy carry the load, you'd better do everything you can to preserve him, like not give him meaningless preseason reps.

A random thought I had on a tiny aspect of preseason strategy.

On kick offs, we generally see kickers doing as they would in regular games - i.e. kick it out the end zone if they can.

But if preseason is about player appraisal, what's the use of that? You're not learning anything. Why not kick it shorter so you can see how your kicking team handles a return?

    Just musing....

And I believe just the exact opposite; that these injuries are occurring because players are not working out at the team facilities year round like they should be. They need to be working out and practicing more not less. Holding them out until Week 1 will result in even more injuries.

The NFLPA was discouraging players from going in to team facilities this offseason and now you are seeing what happens when you do not stay in shape year round.

I am guessing Watt has a 50/50 chance of coming up lame in week 1. Hopefully Butler will be able to keep him from pushing himself into doing something stupid to start the season.

It's the same for resting before playoffs. It's the same for where to stay, or curfews, or any other team-wide decision. The right answer is the one before a positive outcome.

Or how about kick it high and try and land It on the GL forcing the returner to choose to catch it ,let it go, or run it ? Not only evaluate your guys , but work on creating a field position advantage and possible turnovers..

What exercise could Dobbins have done to not have his knee explode when taking a direct frontal shot on it by a large human at high speed?

What are you talking about? There is not a direct frontal shot or exploding injury here. I was expecting some high impact knee to the helmet or something where his foot gets trapped.

Normal tackle, so yes there is a possibility that this could have been avoided with being in better football shape. It was definitely not one of those crazy EXPLODING hits you were talking about.

Not that you can expect much top tier strategizing from Tomlin, but it'd be nice if they tried to max their reps for the starters throughout. Injury concerns are largely a case of a false sense of control - they can happen in practice as much as they can happen in a pre-season or regular season game. To me, the goal should be to have the team as prepared as possible for week 1 in terms of chemistry, getting reps in a new offense, etc.

I saw it from a different angle.

So what exercise could he have done to stop his ACL from buckling when his cleats got caught in the turf?

Awkwardly trying to avoid a hit is the #1 cause of non-contact injuries. You have to accept injuries are going to happen in sports (you just hope it's not you)
