Mason is strictly paint by numbers. If anything goes wrong, he can't overcome it, then his stans claim that "penalties killed the drive".

Penalties hurt, but so does checking down on your first read on 3rd and long.

If they don't lose enough games it might be tough. I'm thinking more like 2023, a year removed from Ben retiring.

I wanted to see what he could do with the 1s but I guess we will have to settle for something else. Carolina will probably have their 1s on D.

I wonder how most teams will treat this game. Usually the last game is a tryout for backups, but the 3rd is also traditionally a tuneup for the starters. Coupled with the fact that teams will have an extra week off after this game might affect coaching decisions.

I'm from The Carolinas and most friends there say they will play 1s regardless of what The Steelers do. I don't know how long but that's their plan.

If that is the case, this will be a true test to see what Haskins is made of. He won't be playing with a lot of 1s on our side. Here comes the "better look like you are the varsity player" scenario.

Playing without your 1s against another team's 1s is somewhat flawed to me, but that's my thought process. I wish we had 1s against 1s. 1s beats 2s any day of the week.

Should be interesting though. There will be a lot of guys trying to make either team.

If the result of the game actually mattered, that would be a good point. It does not, so it is not.

If anything, that makes it a better test for the backups who will be in the game to face the other team's starters.

Could be right? This is only my opinion, and we all know
about opinions, If we acquire enough draft capital we can and will compete
for hopefully our next franchise QB. You have to give to get.

If you are going to use the word “Franchise”, then our next Franchise QB may not even be born.

I don’t know why he would know, but Tomlin stated Carolina planned to play their starters a lot snd it would be a good opportunity to watch Haskins.

I don't disagree that Rudolph often looks bad when things break down but no way am I blaming him for checking down as a way to elevate Haskins in comparison. Haskins has done almost nothing but check down.

True, but he's converting 3rd downs when he has to. He's also had a few nice passed underneath where he hit RBs in stride, allowing them to convert in easy matchups.

Mason is throwing 3 yards to a stationary target facing him when they need 10.

That said, neither guy is The Future.

Mason is throwing for around 2 yards more per pass. I'm not some huge fan of his and do not expect him to be the next starter unless it's on a very temporary basis. I hope Haskins blows it up tonight and looks incredible. I just think to this point of the preseason that Rudolph has clearly been the better player.

Ugh, disagree. 2 FG drives, one trip to the RZ. His YPA is up because Claypool made a play for him. Also, Haskins is throwing to guys like Rico Bussey, Matt Sexton, and Cody White.

After reading that quote I started thinking that tonight might be the Battle for the final QB roster spot. Dobbs vs Haskins tonight!

Before this I was assuming that it was a forgone conclusion that Dobbs would be cut at the end of the month.

He made the throw to Claypool. Are we going to take out Haskins only throw that went for any real yardage in the last game because it was a dump off with a ton of YAC? And I am not sure why Haskins gets credit because he handed it off and RBs got it into the end zone for him. Haskins has all of 1 TD pass. Rudolph would have that as well if JuJu had actually made a play on a ball to the end zone that was well thrown; not sure how much having JuJu was really an advantage on that throw as JuJu played it horribly. And regardless of who Haskins is throwing to the issue is that he isn't actually throwing it significantly past the line of scrimmage if he throws it past it at all. I want to see him do more than dump it off before I think he is a threat to be the backup. I don't particularly like Rudolph and I definitely do not dislike Haskins. I simply have seen basically nothing from Haskins this preseason that tells me he is anything more than a competent checkdown guy. I want to see more though and will be thrilled if I do.
