it came down to which backup to keep after 1998 season. oldham or deshea townsend. both played well, we kept townsend. it ended up working well for us but oldham was as good at the time.

My fandom started in the 80's. It's nice to read input on some of these guys, even from the 70's, that I didnt know much about.

We have some weird fandom for Fred McAfee going on. Four likes for him and only two for Ryan Clark and Ron Shanklin.

Thank you Hanratty. Your inspiring stories about Brady keys and Johnny Samples are far better than some of the very low finales of ex-Steelers Big Daddy, Mike Webster, Terry Long and Justin Strzelczyk.

Wow, one of the young guys here is going to be chronicling the 2010s in 40 or 50 years. Sorry about that kid.

Going back to Rod Woodson, I remember being pissed that he was holding out as a rookie for his track career. I'm sure it was just a tactic to use for more money but nevertheless, glad he finally reported.

Your very welcome. Big Daddy's last game was the 1963 Pro Bowl in which he blocked a FG and forced an astonishing 6 fumbles and was named MVP. He was at the peak of his career only to be found dead in his apartment from a heroin overdose 5 months later.
Then you have Brady Keys who was born poor during the great depression and ended up being an economic advisor to the President.
Every player who has ever wore the Black and Gold has a story behind them. From the heroic like Rocky Bleier to the tragic like Big Daddy and Gabe Rivera and many in between.

Don't believe it my friend. Big Daddy got shot off his horse while trying to get away from the burning Dentist wagon.

I'll let you try to guess what I'm talking about.

upload_2021-8-20_5-57-40.jpeg Mike Wagner A couple of interesting stats on Wagner. He never had a pick 6. Involved in 48 turnovers (36 interceptions and 12 fumble recoveries), he fumbled 5 times on those turnovers.

Red Mack is a high school legend playing for the Hampton Talbots in northern Allegheny County. He then went on to start at Notre Dame before being drafted by the Steelers. In 1963 he lead the NFL in yards per catch averaging 24.7. His last season was in 1966 playing for the Packers as a backup WR. In SuperBowl I he made 2 special team tackles in the Packers victory over the Chiefs.

Yeah I felt the same way about Rod until he suited up and showed his skill set. I remember Eric Green holding out as a rookie and Coach Noll when questioned about it famously replied: "Eric Who?" Green went on to have a very good albeit short career as a Steeler. One of the first mega-sized TE's.

Cannonball Butler was a favorite of mine in grade school because I thought his name was really cool. He rotated in and out of the lineup but was mostly a backup to Dick Hoak. He was traded to the Falcons where he became an All-Pro RB. He led the Falcons in rushing his first 4 years there.

Do you have a Dick Shiner story? It looks like he had his career year in 1968.
