I dig stories like that. Damn, now that I think of it all I got is Ed Ott, Pirate catcher from years ago, looked up at me during warm up at a Phillie/BUC game, saw my Pirate hat and tossed me the ball which still sits atop my dresser.

Willie Stargell came up to me at Forbes Field when I was at the fence in the $1.00 left field bleachers but I froze like a deer in headlights and then ran back to my sisters.

My wife and I had tickets in the small section that stood out in the end zone at 3 rivers by where the players entered the locker room. I had the wife's camera in my hand without the strap around my neck of course, when low and behold Dwayne Woodruff picked a pass right at the end of half and ran to that EZ, did a pose right in front of me as I snapped a picture. He then pointed to me and tossed me the ball only the guy beside me reached over and grabbed it and took off up the stairs and into the stadium depths. My wife still says, you should have had the strap around your neck.

Roberto Clemente used to toss us kids balls in the right field seats before the game at Forbes Field. So that tells you how old I am. Anyway I remember chicken on the hill with Will!!! Remember that one?

As you can tell by my avatar the Pirates were my life as a youngster growing up in the Burgh. I begged my sisters to take me to his chicken place during games so we could get free piece if he hit a home run.

Loved me some Andy!!!!! I always remember his TD run. I think it was 90-100 yards?? Andy helped the young D players in the early 70's.

IMO there are players in the HOF that he was better then. In Golf they always say (insert name) is the best player without a major. IMO Andy Russell is one of the best player not in the HOF.

4 days until Steeler Prediction Poll

Steelers would have a pretty good team of non-HoFs. QB would be the biggest issue, but Barry Foster, Willie Parker, Ward, Lipps, Thigpen, E. Green, any of the 70s OL or Marvel Smith, Starks, DeCastro, Hartings at C. White, Holmes, Greenwood, Hampton, Aaron Smith on DL, Andy Russell, Lloyd, Harrison, Porter, Gildon, Merriweather, Kirkland, Farrior as LBs, Ike Taylor, JT Thomas, Woodruff, Wagner, Lake, Ryan Clark.

I always wondered why Jon Kolb didn't get more consideration for the HOF. He protected Bradshaw's blind side for years, he was the anchor on a line that had two 1,000 yard rushers in the same season.
I guess when his name comes up the HOF committee probably moans "Oh no not another Steeler from the 70's!"

There have been numerous mentions on these boards of LC and Ward being slighted in the HOF but IMO Andy Russell is the most deserving Steeler to have not been inducted. He was overshadowed by Lambert and Ham but we'll deserving of the Hall.

Damn, never thought of that but we would be in the hunt with that group and if it was this year we would have Ben under center, he's not in the HOF.

when I was younger trading football cards with the other kids in the 80s, he always struck me as a guy you didn't want to meet in a dark alley. Specifically his '79 card IIRC. He just looked like a mean SOB, probably a good dude but you know when you're a kid how you perceive things :lolol:

He was always considered one of the strongest men in the NFL. He put that to the test and entered the World's Strongest Man contest and finished fourth overall.
