My dad had orders to GFAB in late 75 so we moved to Grand Forks from PA. My sister was born on base in 76 and we moved off base in 78 into GF proper, my dad got out shortly after. We always talked about moving back east but it never happened because it was during that economic downturn in the 80's in PA where jobs were hard to come by. So we just never left ND.

So spent the majority of my life either in GF or Fargo. It is a frozen hellscape every winter lol. My cousin used compare winters in PA to the ones we had in ND, yeah the minus 10 degree temp is the same but it's the wind that's a killer. Wind starts up in Alberta or Lake Winnipeg and just sweeps down towards Nebraska with nothing stopping it, 50 below wind chills. That screenshot @Blast Furnace posted from Fargo is accurate literally nothing stopping the wind in ND except some shelter belts an a stray hill here and there. Life in North Dakota isn't easy am I right?

Walleye is boring. If you fry it and bread it it tastes like fried breading. Although, fried breading can be good.

I some how knew that was coming. :smiley1:
You know in the south where I now live. They (mostly) only eat fish ,no matter what kind , fried.
I like all kinds of fish made different ways.
    Even smoking one.:smiley1:

Back in the 70’s some Sports Illustrated writer said one of his favorite meals was a fish sandwich, in Green Bay, from any bar with an “Old Style” sign outside.

Where I grew up in the Burgh, every corner bar sold a great cod fish sandwich on Fridays because of all of the Catholics.

For years I looked forward to some day going to Green Bay for the best fish sandwich.

Years later I was in Oshkosh for the EAA show, I went to Green Bay afterwards, drove around Lambeau Field and found a corner bar with an Old Stye sign out front. I was starting to salivate on how good this sandwich was going to be after all these years.

They served me one of those frozen hockey pucks like McDonald’s.

    Im still pissed.

That's food cost that is killing the small market vendors. I watch all these great places on triple D that do fresh fish and burgers where their sales are great so the cost of the fresh ingredients aren't bad. However if you aren't packing in the people and selling out every day you can't afford it. We had a new BBQ spot open up in town right before the pandemic lots of great reviews on slow smoking the big 3 reviews the last few months have been horrible, lots of the food is cold. I told the wife it has to be food cost. Can't cook tons of ribs, brisket and pulled pork and not sell it, too damn costly they are doing smaller amounts and trying to keep it warm all day.

Well, I shan't disagree with your position on fried breading... but on walleye, I mean, I get it's not the heaviest fish in terms of flavor, but I've prepped it a number of different ways (grilled w/ garlic butter and lemon, fried, crusted with cajun spice, e.g.) over the years and have liked them all, especially if paired with grandma's homemade cole slaw and some cucumber dill salad.

Haven't had the STD version of smoked, but it sounds good; I'll give that a go this summer. Nor have I tried toasting it in front of a campfire with some bros and Old Milwaukee, pledging 'it doesn't get any better than this', which I was led to believe as a child was the best way to have anything from the wilderness.

Suddenly I want to have walleye under these conditions.

Never mind, I just want the scenario.

I enjoy it beer battered and fried it goes well with fries light and flakey not an over powering fish taste. Salmon to me is a heavy fish taste no matter how its been prepared. I learned a couple of years ago that most of the walleye sold in the States commercially is from Canada although seems like every one in Minnesota fishes for walleye.

I've only bought it a few times, and when asked it has typically come wild from Canada or farm raised from MN or WI.

It goes well with fries as well; and I agree with the comparison to salmon, which I like as well. Catfish is another that I like, whose heavier flavor I have to space out more between dishes.

I wasn't brought up around a lot of seafood. My parents' idea of experimenting was going Mrs. Paul's instead of Van De Kamp's on Fridays during lent.

You are correct...I don't mind summer and fall around here, but the winters are what is going to drive my wife and I to retire somewhere else. The older I get, the less tolerant of snow and cold I am...and I have lived here my whole life

Smoked is the best way I've had it. (Walleye, and Muskie)
I don't think there is a fresh water fish I haven't eaten. Even Alligator Gar.

I had a Buddy whos Grandfather was licensed 2 catch them. That is a Alligator. They are delicious.
What I was talking about earlier is a type of Gar fish in the south called Alligator Gar.
You might have already known this, but if not I was just explaining. :smiley1:
A real Alligator is indeed Delicious, and that is what my buddies Grandfather was licensed for.
It's a high fine out this way to hunt for them without tags.
