Pat Freiermuth didn't drop a single pass in the red zone across three seasons at Penn State

Almost sounds as good as Hunter Henry's story coming out of College

It's going to be nice to have a TE that can actually catch, when Ebron starts dropping passes, sit his ass down.

I doubt he gets as wide open as some of those, but would be nice.

I've seen plenty of clips with him making tough catches in traffic, including a couple with the defender grabbing him before the ball arrived.

TEs have been underused around here to catch passes. What makes you think that is going to change?

Hope I guess ..Maybe the new OC and this being Ben's last year plus the Team has to try to show why they picked a TE that high....

He will probably be the second most important 87 in the city of Pittsburgh before too long.

    Not sure they've been underused.
Just when you add in dropped passes, and batted passes, it might seem that way.

Is that the most ordered number from the Primanti Brothers menu?

It's Sidney Crosby's jersey number. So if he keeps his college number it will be 87.

It might take longer then a year, this pick was for Ben's successor imo.

Vance had a season with over 50 catches, Ebron wasn't underused, he dropped too many passes.

I see Ben still salivating over Ebron, though i could be . Harris & the linemen will help the dumb warhorse this coming year... hopefully.

They need blocking TEs to help the declining OL play. When have the steelers had a top 10 TE. Or for that matter, even a top 20 TE position group? 50 catches would probably put a TE in the 15 range. I guess that's not too bad.

    IDK

If a TE catches a lot of passes everyone knows who they are. But are they truly a TE or just a large WR playing close? If they block well, typically no one knows who they are.

Pretty hard to be a blocking tight end and get recognized as top anything.

I hear you. Would you rather have an extra OL blocker type guy or a Travis Kelce receiver type guy? It didn't help the Chiefs in the SB. Seems like it really depends on the quality of your OL and running game

I like the Freiermuth pick in principle, the comparisons I have seen for him are Heath Miller and Zach Ertz. If he is near that level then it’s a really good selection, and he will be a player that could stick for a decade.

The Steelers have been messing around with mid round RB’s and TE’s for several years with disappointing results, burning picks every year on guys like Snell and Gentry. They decided to try to fix those two positions once and for all this year, despite issues elsewhere. Let’s hope the strategy pays off

I didn't see anything in that short highlight video that screamed "star". In fact, what do you see that you don't see here, besides getting caught from behind? JJ has more big play ability.

Freiermuth has way more upside than Jesse, Pat is the all time leading TD catcher for Penn State TEs, he caught 99% of catchable targets over his final two years.
